Merlin wasn't really sure what the difference between night and day was right now. He was glad to be out of hospital and home in his own bed with Brandon close on hand if he needed anything, but after his operation, he was so tired and had mostly slept the last couple of days away. Even when he was awake, he was sleepy and kept dozing off. Not quite in the middle of conversations, but not far off it. Brandon kept reminding him that it was okay to sleep if he needed to. It was the body's way of recovering and if there was anything Brandon was an expert in now, it was being a sick person and doing his best to recover while his body had other ideas.

He loved chatting with Cassidy online and when he heard she wasn't far of needing to fly to Australia with Tori for what was frankly an awful reason to do with Sash, Merlin wanted to see her before she left. He had two massive bombs dropped on him in recent days and he didn't want her to find out anything like that secondhand. Since they decided to call it quits on dating and remain friends, they had been as close as ever. Besides Wes, Cas was Merlin's closest friend and they pretty much told each other everything. Their stars hadn't aligned for them dating, with Merlin's shock of finding out he was adopted and Cas juggling a huge upheaval in her life heading into her gender affirmation surgery. It was too much emotional stress to tackle and still focus on dating. But they had both eventually went on to fall in love in the most unexpected ways with their perfect matches, so maybe everything really did happen for a reason.

He didn't even realise he had dozed off again until Cas was there, gently giving his knee a little shake. He told her to come any time and if he was sleeping, just wake him up. Catching up with her before she flew out to Sydney was way more important. He blinked, stretching as he gave her a sleepy smile. "Hey, honeybunch. What time is it? Jeez, I didn't even realise I fell asleep again."

Hey, Tor. I have huge favour to ask. Like, beyond huge. And you're probably going to wanna say no and I get that. I really do. But I have to ask you to think about it because there aren't really any other options. Anyway, when you get this can you just shoot me a text back or FaceTime or whatever. Don't worry about the timezones. I'm not exactly sleeping much lately. Tell Cas I said hi. Love you guys. JC x

When: In the wake of Justin and Sasha's accident

Peyton was on autopilot leaning against the wall while he sorted through his keys to find the right one for his apartment, trying to fight off another yawn. Days like today, he really questioned why he wanted to be a doctor. Then again, he could never have anticipated his emergency medicine residency would be during a global pandemic or that he would win the residency at a hospital like Mount Sinai. He was only human. The days where he had been worked into the ground and every inch of him ached, he wished even just in passing that he had an easier calling. It was only ever temporary until he could catch up on sleep and start the process all over again.

These last few months had been harder than ever, though. Not only had he still been trying to work through his delayed grief of Andi’s death and how she chose to go but he caught covid twice, one of which was the horrific delta variant that left him near bedridden for three weeks. The fatigue from ‘long covid’ was out of this world and he was struggling more than ever when was on the on-call rota. Coffee or Red Bull barely touched it. He finally unlocked his door and shuffled inside, trying to shrug his backpack off his shoulder and shuck his thick coat at the same time.

“Hey, you’re home!” Tori came out of the kitchen where he had been waiting for the kettle to boil. “Can we talk?”

Peyton jumped, dropping his bag and keys... )

Who: Sasha Stanford and Justin Campbell + Everyone at their Family Thanksgiving
What: Thanksgiving Dinner
Where: Vermont Lakehouse
When: After this and this

All in all, the spontaneous joint family Thanksgiving in Vermont had been a huge success. Sasha had lost track of everyone who was here but they were all family and he had been mingling on and off all evening until everyone sat down for a huge meal. The best part was when everyone had to write down one thing they were thankful for and put it into a jar. Later, they were read out over dessert and it was the best freaking way to mark what was their first blended Thanksgiving their family dynamics had grown.

Now everyone was relaxing and chilling out, enjoying the company and the huge open fire while a steady snowfall continued outside. After dinner, Justin and Sasha went and changed into their pyjamas and slippers with matching flannel Harry Potter pants and long sleeve t-shirts so they could completely relax and chillout.

Now, they were slowdancing again in front of the huge glass doors with views out onto the snow-covered lawn. It was just like their date night, only with better views and brilliant company. They were caught up in their own little world for a bit. Sasha gave him a kiss, smiling. "You okay, baby? Not too overwhelmed with everyone here or anything? Somewhere along the line, our family has mutated into a small army. That's super cool." He bumped his nose against Justin's and they shared a kiss

They were about an hour out of from the lakehouse in Vermont and the roadtrip sing-a-long had given way to chatting about anything and everything. Justin was jumping in and out of the conversation but he kept getting lost in his own thoughts because he inevitably had a hell of a lot on his mind since the latest plot twist about his birth mum. He was also thinking a lot about his tour, really wanting to get medically cleared for the green-light on it.

Still, his mind kept going back to Alexis, trying to calibrate that she was the one who gave birth to him and the woman he spent his whole life believing to be his biological mother was actually a kidnapping abuser who never loved him and only ever took him to harm him. The more he let himself think about it, the more he realised until he came to New York, he had never been loved. Possibly his grandparents in Chicago felt something like love towards him but it had always been in the sense they were just putting up with him because his ‘mother’ had been a drug addict prostitute and they felt obligated. He was so dissociated from his childhood that it felt like someone else’s memories now, but the pain of the abuse was still there. You couldn’t erase that from your mind if you survived it. That wasn’t how it worked.

He pulled himself back out of the whir of thoughts he got caught up in and finished his can of Diet Coke, squashing the can and shoving it on the floor beside his messenger bag... )

Sasha laughed as he watched Justin move over to where Will was sitting, enjoying how much Justin was in the moment after all the mess with his recent suicide attempt and subsequent renal dialysis from fucking his kidneys with the pills. The road trip turned out to be an excellent idea. The lakehouse was relaxing and private, it would give them the breather they needed and help Justin kickstart himself back in the right direction. After all Sasha’s anxiety issues, it was a relief to see him turn the corner to get back on track.

After the shock plot twist with Alexis, everyone had been bracing themselves for Justin to have an emotional crash with that but he hadn’t. He did crash out for a few days and slept but he was in a good mental place when he woke up, his moods finally getting back an equilibrium. Their trip to Vermont would kill a few birds with one stone. Justin and Will could work on their book, they could all catch up as friends with Zeke needing a breather from his cancer treatment, and Justin was going to use the wide open space with excellent acoustics to do some vocal and dance training to recondition and get back on his feet with tour rehearsals.

And today, Justin was looking particularly delicious in his ripped black skinny jeans.. )

If there was one thing about their squad, it was when shit when down with one of their own, they knew how to rally. It was how Justin went from not really being too up for visitors while he was having dialysis to having Sasha, Cassidy, Tori, Layla, Maryanne, Skylar, Finn, and Shannon. More of their friends would probably arrive too, considering the gigantic twist of fate things took with Merlin. It was a shock to see that Merlin accidentally posted a personal post about Brandon to his public Instagram account but the news came that Brandon had apparently taken a bad turn and no one knew much of anything.

“Shit’s absolutely hitting the fan all over socials about Brandon,” Skylar told them with a low whistle, shaking his head as he scrolled his phone. “No one seems to know what the fuck’s going on. Fans are shitfighting between it’s a scam or a hacking and wanting to paint themselves with rainbows and declare themselves Brandon’s biggest big fat gay allies. Then there’s a whole pile of Merlin’s fans shitfighting because they thought he was straight and single fighting with a whole bunch of fellow pansexual fans telling the other side they’re idiots because he came out as pan. Did he actually come out? I can’t even remember anymore.”

Who: Justin Campbell and Sasha Stanford with the whole crew
What: The Full Monty... and so it begins!
Where: Rehearsal Hall, NYC
When: Day after this

The last couple of days had been a big deal for Justin and his fellow crew working for Caden's company, Drake Productions. A lot of changes were in the wind, a lot which Justin had known about in advance because it involved was three-pronged of what Caden was laying groundwork for: a Footloose on the road tour, Justin's simultaneous one-show-per-location solo tour, and the charity event where Caden's biggest male stars were going to be doing The Full Monty to raise money for a select group of charities important to to those who worked for him.

Along with that, Caden had just announced internally that the event would signal the start of a run on Broadway of his newly commissioned show, none other than The Full Monty: The Musical and his lead in the role of Jerry was the one and only Billy Willis, who had been the supporting in Footloose since almost the start. As a result, Justin's newly appointment sidekick stepping full-time into the role of Willard was Merlin (with Tori piggybacking primary understudy for both Ren and Willard's roles), who had already been jobsharing with Billy since Billy beat cancer, after winning a scholarship to work with Caden's company some time ago. Justin knew about this particular shuffle awhile ago when Caden was first in discussion with Billy about the role. Justin was over the moon for him, always happy to see his incredibly talented friends be offered lead roles. If anyone deserved it, it was Billy. Justin already had great chemistry with Merlin, who was a great Willard.

What that all meant was, not only were some of Justin's forever favourite people going on tour with him but they were all going to be working on a charity event with him to raise money for causes extremely dear to him. That meant there would be singing and dancing rehearsals and a lot of time being in each others company. He couldn't think of a better way to start the New Year after what turned out to be one of the worst years of his life.

He came bounding into the rehearsal hall hand-in-hand with Sasha, cheeks flushed and ready to go. "Okay, who's ready to go on a vocal warm-up? Wait, is everyone here?" His phone started to ring and he swore, trying to fish it out of the pocket of his skinny jeans to take the call. It ended a few minutes later and he gave a wave of his hand, going over to the piano to grab his microphone headset to put on. "Merlin's out for today, he's got a family emergency he's had to go out of town for. There's enough here to get started. We can all be in on this, even if you aren't a singer, because if you ain't see it yet, I'm going to cut you out of my life for good," he joked and sat down at the piano to start off the warm-up, Bohemian Rhapsody, adjusting his microphone at his mouth with a smirk.

It had been a long-haul, but Justin was finally home from hospital. He had a week of intensive ketamine infusions and would go one day a week for the foreseeable future for them because there was no denying his bipolar had responded to it. On top of that, he had ongoing therapy with a psychologist and psychiatrist, as well as Ari working with him on therapy tactics in his everyday life to help him cope better both personally and professionally. Finally, Justin was on an upswing. In the last few days, he had been as stable as Sasha had seen him in a long time and he was champing at the bit to get back to some sort of work with his music.

That was why Sasha got home from school and his own quick doctor’s appointment to pick up new prescriptions for his migraine medication that he found Justin in their communal music/games/hangout room with Lewis doing some trial makeup runs with him. Cassidy and Tori were there watching too and when Sasha got further into the room, he saw Zeke and Will were there too. Justin was sitting on a stool by the window with a joint nestled between his fingers while he spoke to what sounded like Caden on the phone. The light breeze from the window was drawing the smoke through the small crack. All windows up this many floors in their house only opened enough to maybe get your hand out up to your elbow and nothing more. They were secured, and then doubled secured even more… a necessity with a suicidal person living there.

At the moment, Justin had to have a certain low dose of medicinal marijuana to keep his manic episodes at bay... )

After the memorial when everyone had finished watching the wreaths and lanterns float across the lake, Cassidy had ushered Tori to one of the nearest cushy beanbag and unceremoniously planted him in it and told him to rest and relax. She brought him a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows (which were also purple, Justin didn't miss a thing in his planning) and sat with him for a little bit to make sure he was okay. Probably double-checking he wasn't about to keel over and start bleeding and vomiting all over the place like the night he lost his shit at the neighbour's barbecue. Other than a lingering headache, a little dull nausea, and some wooziness if he stood too long, he was on the mend. He could've done without any of that crap, but he had to learn the hard way that there was nothing simple about grieving.

Soon, Sasha had come over and pulled another beanbag up beside him while Justin sat nearby playing the bongo drums and started to sing the classic song, Stand By Me, which was one of Andi's favourites. When Sasha asked him how he was feeling, Tori gave him a reassuring smile. "Better. Kind of done-in with all the emotion and still feeling a little rough with cracking my head on the pavement, but I think better than I have in awhile." He looked back over to Justin. "Did you give him a list of the songs she loved? I didn't know he could play the bongos. He blows me away, I feel so honoured to have the chance to work with him. Cas adores him. I love that he takes care of her and she can trust him to confide in. I can't believe he did all this for Ands and he barely knew her."

Sasha wasn’t in a good headspace from the moment he woke up. It was the day of Andi’s planned memorial which they were going to do down on the pier after dark and Justin had secretly planned a lot for it behind the scenes because he wanted to make it special for Andi, Sash and Tori. Sasha and Tori had ideas of what they wanted to do, but Justin had arranged a few things to make it extra special. Nothing anyone had to do anything for. He hired some help, which would get everything sorted over the day when everyone had planned to see some of the local sights and took a the shops in the nearest town.

Justin wasn’t going, of course. He was still strictly in recovery mode and knew he had to rest. Tori had mostly been in bed since the horrible night at the neighbours’ barbecue so he stayed back at the lakehouse with Justin and Zeke. Sasha was going to go but he pulled the plug when he woke up. He said he wanted to be alone and went for a walk somewhere. Justin asked if he could just send him some texts now and again to let him know he was okay out there on his own.

Justin ended up crashing around lunch time. He laid down for a bit because he had some stomach pain and fell asleep. He woke up a couple of hours later to witness Sasha standing on the other side of the room throwing his cell phone into the wall and bursting into tears, pressing his hands over his face. “Sash?” He was stiff and sore when he got up, but he went over to Sasha to pull him into a hug, prying his hands away from his face. “What is it? What’s happened? Hey, come on. Talk to me, baby.”

Sasha tried to pull away but it was only reflexive due to his frustration... )

The first thing Tori realised when he started to wake was how much pain he was in. All over, converging in his head with a nauseating throb. That lead to the next thing he felt… sick. The kind of sick you had little warning that your body was going to give into it. All he knew was that before he could fully wake up and get his bearings, his stomach was rapidly emptying itself and someone was nursing him through it. There was a soft warm hand on his cheek and a gentle voice murmuring at him that it was okay. By the time he was done, he had woken up more and felt a little better once his gut was empty. He really, really hated being sick in front of people in general, let alone the girl he was head-over for and he thought was hot as hell. “So, it wasn’t all just some embarrassing nightmare?” he mumbled, looking up at Cassidy once he planted his head on his pillow again. “I’m so, so sorry for everything. I… I’m sorry for this. You don’t have to do this. Oh god, I feel like hell.”

“I bet you do.” Cassidy put the bucket aside that she had been holding for him and wiped his face with the cool cloth she had fetched not long before Tori woke up. She picked up a bottle of Gatorade housing a straw, holding it between her fingers so he could sip it and stroked his hair with her other hand. “But I don’t want any apologies. Not even a little one. Everything that happened, you’ve been in so much pain and I understand. Even if I didn’t understand, you still have nothing to apologise for. I’m here to take care of you and, if you want me to, keep you company and listen if you want to talk. But you don’t have to do that either.”

She waited until he managed at least a few small sips and then laid down beside him, making sure she was careful and slow so she didn’t bounce him around when he was nauseous... )

Sasha sat back from the mingling crowd at one of the picnic tables, sipping from a can of Dr Pepper. Here was pretty much the last place he wanted to be. They had owned their holiday house longer than the Kingstons, even, and the Kingstons had their since before Andi and Tori were born. They had been so kind inviting Sasha when they knew he was up in Vermont but once he got there, it became evident the invitation was most likely because they hoped he would bring Justin.

When he came alone along with Tori and Cas, they whole ‘Ohh, it’s lovely to see you again, Sash. We told Tori you were more than welcome to bring a plus one’. Tori cut in for him at that point and said it was a kind offer but Sasha’s fiance was ill and recovering from an operation. There was also an uncomfortable moment when the Rosemont’s eldest son, Keith, avoided shaking Cassidy’s hand when Tori introduced her. Tori didn’t notice because he was chatting to the mother, but Sasha did and Cassidy definitely did. She was left hanging awkwardly and Sasha gave Keith a lingering stare-down before offering to get Cas a drink.

Tori handed Cassidy her strawberry sundae over her shoulder where she was sitting on the park bench watching some ducks swim across the nearby pond. On the drive home from White Plains to visit Justin in hospital, they decided to stop at a park for ice cream. He sat beside her, nursing his own sundae, but his was doused in caramel syrup and peanuts. “You okay? You’ve been quiet since we left the hospital. It’s got to be tough seeing him like that.”

Cassidy shot Tori a sheepish smile when he caught her in the middle of her deep thoughts. She plucked the spoon from the ice cream and swirled it through the syrup. “Weird, huh? Considering I met him in hospital when he wasn’t much better than this. I’m not sure if you knew that or not. He gave me a lot to think about, which is kind of his specialty. I think something you probably know more than anyone how hard it is to see someone you love in hospital, no matter how many times you see them there. It really doesn’t get easier, you know?”

“I do,” Tori murmured, nodding. He scuffed the tip of his Converse in the gravel at their feet. “The last time I saw Andi was via Skype. It was the night she died. Maybe around an hour or two before she did. I’d just finished the show and she called me up. I should’ve known it was different to the other times, but that didn’t even cross my mind because she still had another ten to twelve months to live, according to the doctors. Something in her voice, the way she said goodbye. I still lie awake some nights, replaying the conversation over in my head. You just wish you could take it all away for them, help in some way to ease it. But that’s cancer. Everyone feels like that about cancer. For Justin, he’s got to face the stigma. People wondering why he’s suicidal when, on the face of it, he has a great and perfect life. Or, he’s got so much money, how come he doesn’t pay for the best healthcare? All the while, judgemental assholes failing to understand that he already has it, and it’s still not enough because he’s seriously ill. It just sucks. People wonder why introverts exist. It’s because they’re fed up dealing with dickheads thinking they know best about other people’s lives. Shit, I sound bitter,” he added with a laugh, shaking his head.

She was totally objectifying her connections and Justin’s status to bend the ‘family only’ rules of the ICU. Thankfully, Mark’s exceptional negotiation skills had visitation extended to Justin’s friends, as seeing them would help his emotional and psychological recovery. Assuming he was up to visitors (the chance he would be had been abou 50/50 when Cas last checked), and they could visit him in the small window of visiting hours they let the rules be bent.

“Hey…” Cassidy murmured, coming up to Justin’s bed. “How’s the patient feeling?” She knew better than to take anything with Justin at face-value. How he looked on the outside could be completely different to how he really was. Hell, had they all learned that lesson again the hard way. Right under their noses, Justin had been using hard drugs and being tormented by his exacerbated mental demons. He had actually gotten up on stage and delivered his usual flawless performance to a full house with a standing ovation when he was borderline psychotic and high on Ice. Even though inside, Sasha had on dark sunglasses and was being helped out of a wheelchair parked in the living room by Justin. It turned out to be convenient that Mark still had the wheelchair he used when he had been sick because when Sasha got hit with one of these demon migraines, it took a few days for the numbness in his body to abate. It wasn’t needed just around home because Justin helped him with everything, and if Justin wasn’t there, Mark helped him. Sasha trusted Justin’s dad just as much as he did Justin. He didn’t get embarrassed around him anymore. But Sasha needed to see a doctor because it had been a particularly bad one and his GP wanted him to have an MRI just make sure the hemiplegic migraine was the correct diagnosis. Plus, he got more refills on his much-needed medication.

The doorbell rang just as Sasha was struggling to his feet with Justin’s help. Justin took his full weight, arm wrapped securely around his way while Sasha hooked his hand around Justin’s neck. On the upside, after being briefly mortified in the car trip home that he peed himself, turned out he just spilled his water on his lap when he dozed off accidentally. He couldn’t feel a lot of the left side of his body, so he panicked that he couldn’t tell if he wet himself. Luckily, he still kept control of his functions this time. Now, he was just so wiped out and recovering from feeling so bad with terrible migraine. It turned into a demon migraine quickly when it it. Stress and anxiety probably triggered it, he knew that. But now it had climaxed and he had pushed into recovery, he was feeling very much hungover but the pain had eased. Save for one time at the hospital when he got dizzy in the elevator, it had been around six hours since he last threw up. The worst of it was gone, he just had to rest and recover now.

“You okay to stand, beautiful? I can carry you if you’re too dizzy. Just give me the word, no playing heroes,” Justin said, watching him closely. Then he gave Sasha a loving smile and pressing a lingering kiss to his temple. “You just look so adorable when you’re sick. Sorry.”

Sasha snorted. “I look like hell, but nice try. I’m a bit dizzy, but I’ll be okay to get to bed.” They got up the hall to their bedroom and right as Justin was about to nudge the door closed behind them, Gen appeared with a smile.

Gen wrapped her arm around Sasha’s shoulders and gave him an expert mom-kiss to the top of his head... )

Standing backstage where the curtains were drawn back, Cassidy watched Justin rehearse a new choreographed routine. He had the little headset with microphone on, running over the chorus of the song as he danced. She could see how hard he was pushing that there was a chance his depression had his another upswing. Or he was deliberately going hard at it because he needed the distraction. She never tried to psychoanalyse him. She knew that - in some freak stroke of luck that she still knew how to dance - once she got the part on Footloose working alongside Justin, it would always be a matter of taking each day as it came. It literally could change by the day, or even the hour. She just rolled with it, learning how to both work with him, and support him at the same time.

When he stopped for a breather, snatching up his drink bottle, she stepped out to greet him. “Well… what do you think?” She smiled and did a little twirl on the spot so he could see the results of what he nudged her to have the courage to do. After close to a week with Ajay, she hadn’t just changed her hair colour and got a few new outfits.
