What: Well-earned celebrations
Where: Casa de Campbell, NYC
When: After this

Gen was in the kitchen when a message came through on her phone. She unplugged it from where it was charging on the windowsill and found a picture message from Mark with a selfie of him and Justin with the caption, Feeling better, Mum. Mark was sitting beside Justin on the hospital bed, giving a thumbs up and Justin was pointing to Mark's thumb. And there were hints of smiles, albeit exhausted and peaky. Still, she could see an improvement in Justin from when she had been up to Four Winds to see him the day before yesterday. He hadn't been awake, so it was a brief visit, Paris and her dad coming with her. Justin had looked like a malnourished corpse, and that was probably being kind. They had all been fearing his death in the last week or so, it was tough to see him looking like it.

She smiled and flicked a message back. Very mom-like, of course. Telling Mark to make sure Justin got some rest. She left it at that because she knew why Mark was up there, what news he was delivering to their son. It was impossible to know from the photo whether Justin had already been delivered the news, but considering he did look a little better in his face, she thought so. She hoped so. She hoped it brought their boy some much-needed peace and relief. He had been fighting those demons literally his whole life, and he barely had a breath of life back in him by the end of her latest stunt. Mark only gave her a brief rundown of what the cunt had written in the letters to Justin, but Mark had always had a colourful vocabulary and all that he said wouldn't have been exaggeration. Gen was glad she didn't have access to the cunt herself or she would've rung her neck with her bare hands.

After all they had been through, their little family (or not so little, when you counted all the extensions to it now) had finally found a place where everyone was content and on the same page together. Gen took to official proper married life like a duck to water, realising this was the only thing she wanted all along but let those voices in her head win the battle for too long. She was Justin's mom in every single way but blood, and even then, he still felt like hers by blood. She felt like she had given birth to him herself, and she wished she had. Then the beautiful boy would never have lived with so much torture and pain. Of course, it wasn't all over with this latest turn of events, but it was a start and it was the crux annihilated so he could move on rather than trying to extinguish the life he didn't know how to live anymore. But he was in good hands and hopefully he started to improve little-by-little.

She tucked her phone into the pocket of Mark's sweatpants she was wearing and brought two large pitchers through to the living room, one labelled 'Preggo Juice'. One was filled with classic Cosmopolitan and the other, the mocktail equivalent of them. "Drink up, ladies! We got cunt burning in hell to celebrate." Netflix was at the ready on the TV, a pile of designer beauty products lined the coffee table for mani/pedis and facials, sweatpants were compulsory attire, and a healthy pile of wedding magazines were stacked by the sofa. "We are long overdue for this girls' night. And I'm long overdue getting to know my new soon-to-be sister-in-law."

Gen received the call from Mark about Justin's mother when she was in the middle of a board meeting that morning. Of course, her Executive Assistant had been told that anything to do with her family right now, she could be disturbed in any meeting. Nothing was more important than her son. She broke down and cried in her office for fifteen minutes after she got the news just from sheer and utter relief, but also joy that her baby was free of this demon now, even if it had left many deep and incurable scars. She had still been sitting there at her desk, feeling a little shellshocked that it had even happened, when Ali called her and she was bringing Kat around that night for a girls' night to celebrate while Mark went to see Justin in Westchester. She had girls' nights before, but this was her first with Kat. She had only just met her and now she was not only getting married to James, but was having his baby. With things suddenly looking up in the Campbell world, it was a perfect idea, as far as Gen was concerned.

She poured some of the mocktail into a cocktail glass for Kat and handed it to her. "Welcome to the funhouse, aka, the Campbell Family. May their dicks forever be the death of us," she joked, smirking as she settled in, nursing her own Cosmo.

“Jesus friggin Christ, Jimmy. What the hell’s going on? You were at the hospital?” Mark came into the living room with Ali and Andrew’s two year old son asleep in his arms with his head on Mark’s shoulder. After receiving a message from Sasha that Justin had a bit of a meltdown at the hospital after his therapy, which happened when he ran into James, Mark got his PA to reschedule his afternoon business meetings so he could get home to check on Justin. Sasha assured him he would take care of him, of course. He was given a sedative which finally knocked him out after not sleeping for four or so nights. Mark knew something was going on with his son, but it was a matter of going through the motions until he put it out there. You couldn’t force anything out of him. Trying to was the worst thing you could do.

Still, Mark was an extremely protective dad and he needed to check in on Justin, but also find out why the hell James had been at the hospital. Sasha didn’t elaborate, but told Mark in his message not to worry because James and Kat were going to stick around until Mark or Gen got home from work. In the meantime, James carried Justin to his bed and Mark knew Sasha wouldn’t leave his side. When he was getting out of the car in the parking lot, Ali was there getting Jack out of her car because apparently James called her and needed to talk to her. Basically, Mark had no fucking idea what was going on. He offered to help Ali with Jack while she struggled with the stroller and baby bag. “Justin and Sash?” He pointed over his shoulder with his thumb towards the connecting apartment where the teens lived.

James pointed in the same direction, nodding... )

Who: Ali and Andrew Connor, Mark Campbell and Gen Hart
What: Long overdue double date
Where: Casa de Campbell, NYC
When: Saturday night

Things were changing, but it finally felt like they were moving in the right direction after a lot of pain and heartache. When Mark's parents offered to babysit Jamie and Jack for the night, Ali and Andrew jumped at the chance to have dinner with Mark and Gen. They were a big crazy unconventional family, and Gen just had to take the time to learn the hard way that together was better than alone. Ali still loved Gen, because she knew she made Mark happy.

And the ironic part was, Mark had done exactly the same thing Gen had done years ago when his world bottomed out from under him. Gen might not have turned to the bottle like Mark did, but he had run away and tried to bury his head in the sand when he couldn't deal with it. For awhile there, Ali truly believed her baby girl would never have her real daddy in her life. She had been so angry back then, it was easy to feel hurt and betrayed. But everyone had grown since then, especially Mark, who was now one of the best dads the world had been graced with. Ali knew this fresh start with them was because Mark empathised with Gen's bad decisions, and he wasn't holding them against her.

All the kids were away at a Pride party, and Max had jumped on board and gone along for the ride with them. Ali was glad he was getting out again. Being ill had knocked some of the light out of him for awhile, but he was back to his normal funny and bright self. Ali smiled as she brought a bottle of non-alcoholic sparkling wine to the table with the champagne flutes between her fingers. "I knew you two would eventually get your acts together. We have one very happy little girl excited about being a flower girl, you know. You're pretty much going to be Elsa v2.0, Gen. It's good to see you both content again." She sat and took Mark's hand, giving it an affectionate squeeze.

Who: Ali Connor and Sam Campbell
What: Support & TLC
Where: Sam's apartment
When: Evening after THIS

As soon as Sam opened the door to her, Ali pulled him into a tight hug and just held him. She kissed his cheek and rubbed his back. "How are you holding up?" she asked him softly. Ali knew Sam almost as much as she knew Mark. Because she knew Mark inside and out, all she had to do was think about his polar opposite, and she would have Sam. What she knew was that he would put everyone before himself, and if Mark was hurting, that would take precedent over taking care of himself. Which mean, Mark would be at the hospital in incredible pain about what happened with Justin, and Sam would likely leave himself alone and hurting.

What had just happened was that Sam narrowly escaped seeing Justin jump off a roof, and it was only sheer luck that had him able to talk Justin around after a long time up there in a bad mental state. As soon as Ali saw Sam's Facebook post, she sent him a text and asked him if he needed anything. He didn't answer. She didn't expect an answer straight away because there would be a lot of chaos around getting Justin hospitalised and stable. She waited just long enough to call Sam. He picked up, sounded absolutely terrible on the phone, and told her that he was heading home because Mark told him to get some rest.

Ali stopped and got him and Cooper a pile of groceries to last them a little while. She dropped some things off to Andrew, who offered to make them some soup he would bring around later. He had been on the call-out to Justin, so he knew how hard things had been. But even though Ali and Mark might have split up long ago, they still had a child together, so all of the Campbells were still Ali's family, as far as she was concerned. Justin was her baby girl's favourite person in the whole world. Ali knew it was going to be hard telling Jamie Justin was sick and her daddy was hurting again. She felt so damn hard, that little girl. It killed Ali every time.

"Come on, come sit down. I'll make you a cuppa. You don't need to be alone right now. You've been through too much," she told him.

Who: Ali Connor and Leo Bronson
What: In Case of Emergency
Where: ED, Mount Sinai
When: After THIS and THIS

Those sorts of phone calls you don't want to get when you're at work... or any time for that matter. As a mum, you always worried it was going to be bad news about your kids and because her baby boy had been ill, she had her phone on her at work anyway. Andy had said that Jack was a lot more perky in the recent hours, so it must have just been a big of a bug he picked up and shook it quickly. There was also the fact Max was sick. They had chatted on Facebook a little that morning, and he was going to try to rest it out, and she made sure he had Andy on quick dial. Andy was home with Jack for the day, and Mark had a day off so Sunshine was with him and Justin.

Ali didn't know Leo, but of course she knew of him. She and Max were incredibly close and she was the one Max spilled his guts to all the time. She was his big sister, that was her job. She knew of his insecurities and his worries, especially lately when it came to relationships. It was always going to be a tipping the tightrope situation until he figured out how he felt.

But, the poor bugger, he had gotten sick on the date and it was easy to just assume it was the same bug Jack caught, and only a few weeks earlier, Mark and Justin had too. Then she got that chilling call, and she fucking dropped everything to get to the hospital as quick as she could. Andy met her there with Jack, and even though she knew Leo was probably here somewhere worried as fuck, she had to find out what was going on with Max first. If he was sick enough to need to come to the hospital, it was very serious because Max had a real aversion to blood. One peek and he could be out cold. Therefore, he wasn't a fan of hospitals.

It wasn't for awhile that she managed to get some time with Riley to get a complete picture of what was going on, and she discovered talking to him why it was taking the time it was. Max was being admitted and Andy was going to sit with him because he was sleeping and Ali didn't want him to be completely freaked out when he woke up. If he woke up. He was hovering in a danger zone where he had been very close to slipping into a coma. It still might happen, it just depended on how he responded things.

She had Jack on her hip and he was tired, resting his little head on her shoulder while he sucked on his pacifier and had his hand gripped around the pocket of her shirt. She didn't really know who she was looking for, but she was pretty sure she knew when she spotted him. She went up to the guy about Max's age in the ER waiting room. "Are you Leo?" she asked softly.

It didn't take very long for Leo to know that he wanted to be there for Max when he was feeling shitty. He almost regretted having left Max overnight when he was so sick, but it was a first date, and offering to stay the night might have been a little bit forward. But right now, he couldn't help thinking that being forward was the last thing he should've been worried about, because Max was really fucking sick, and Leo had called him, but he openly admitted to being too weak to get to the door to buzz him up. There was a moment where he'd nearly panicked and started bawling uncontrollably, but that wouldn't help anyone at all, and he managed to keep a grip on his emotions, at least long enough to call 911.

The police arrived, along with an ambulance, and lucky for Leo, they were able to easily get into the building... )

Who: Mark Campbell and Ali Connor
What: Trying to process
Where: Campbell home
When: Saturday morning

It had been a really rough night the night before, that was after a very rough week in general. It was just after midnight that Justin came into their bedroom and told Mark he was feeling really sick. Mark had only just managed to get to sleep despite the he, Gen and Justin hitting the sack early. Gen had a board meeting sharp the next morning she couldn't miss, and Mark had just felt wrecked following a few long weeks in court. Justin had spent the whole day at the theatre rehearsing, so he was wiped out and nearly fell asleep in his dinner. It was definitely a case of family fatigue.

The early night hadn't stopped Mark lying awake, thinking over and over again about what his kid had confessed in the court statement. He had been trying to process it, but it was taking time. He didn't even know whether he should try to talk to Justin about it yet, or wait for his son to come to him. He had been debating that with himself since the case ended, and was still undecided. There was a big chance Justin didn't want to be going over it all again. As tormenting as it was, Mark had to respect that. But then his kid was up sick in the night. Mark got up straight away with him and Gen soon followed, but he told her he had it in hand and should get some sleep for her meeting the next day.

Mark thought it might have just been stress. He spent the rest of the night lying with Justin on his bed with him in between rushed trips to the bathroom. He sent Ali a text around 3am, knowing she turned her phone down at night so it didn't wake the kids, and told her he might have to shift his day with Jamie to another day because Justin wasn't well. They both fell asleep, but when Mark woke about 8am, he realised the rude way that it probably wasn't stress making Justin sick. Because Mark felt like he had been hit by a bus upon waking. He was hot and nauseous, and while his kid slept on, he went ten rounds with the porcelain goddess himself.

And then the doorbell was going when all he wanted to do was curl up in a ball of misery and hate the world. He wasn't at all surprised when he found Ali there. He held his hands up, trying to stop her coming in. "No, no! Fuck. There's, like, father and son cooties going on in here. He's got some sort of bug he's given to me because I was up with him all night. I don't want you catching it! And I have no idea if we've even got any Lysol."

When: Simultaneous to THIS

Ali had gotten very little sleep last night when her second-born wouldn't settle and decided that it was his job to make a concerted attempt to scream the apartment block down. It was hard when he was unsettled and Andrew had a nightshift, but at least by now she was weathered to motherhood so she knew it just came with the territory. It was early, but when the doorbell rang, she was already up but she couldn't specifically say she was 'presentable'. When you had an infant, though, presentable sometimes fell by the wayside in favour of feeding, changing and laundry. A hell of a lot of laundry.

She went to answer the door with said little terror nursed on her hip, only to find the baby daddy of the other apple of her eye. She raised her eyebrows at Mark in question. "To what do I owe the pleasure, twatface?" she greeted him with that teasing air of banter she had with him. Despite their rocky past, they were really good friends now, something they both knew they had to achieve for the sake of their daughter. Now Ali had another baby and Mark had Justin. She was proud of how they had managed to gel their families into a union where they all worked and had their place.

Who: Ali Connor and Max Sullivan
What: Heart-to-heart
Where: Ali & Andrew's home
When: After THIS

With Ali still on maternity leave after having baby Jack, Andrew had been working a few extra shifts just so cashflow was still comfortable. Usually they would spend their kid-free days having time together, usually in bed, because with a lively five year old and a young baby, lovemaking often went by the wayside. Not today, though. It had been the intention, but Andrew was worn out from a hard week at work and fell asleep in the middle of foreplay, which just amused Ali. She was used to being married to a shift worker, and a hard worker at that. Andrew was such a beautiful, chivalrous, traditional guy. Providing for his family was very high on the priority list even if they were comfortable financially.

So, Ali just let him sleep. If he crashed out that hard, he needed it. She had tucked the covers in around him and drew all the curtains so the room was dark and no daylight was escaping in through any cracks. Then she kicked back on the sofa to marathon Once Upon a Time with a pot of tea. Of course, only after she caught up on some housework and doing laundry. They mostly used cloth nappies with Jack, relying on disposable only when they went out or he was being babysat by someone. There was always a pile of laundry to catch up on. Thank fuck for dryers.

She was so chilled out that she lost track of time and when the apartment buzzer went, she jumped in fright and jumped up to get the door so it didn't wake Andrew. When she found Max there, her eyebrows shot up. "You're early. You're never early. What's happened? Is Jackie sick? Are you?" she panicked, locking right into Mum Mode and checking on the baby, the cupping Max's chin with her hand to look him over too.

What: That awkward moment where your wife gets your ex to babysit you
Where: Mark, Gen and Justin's apartment
When: After THIS and THIS

Despite his verbal protests and sheer vehement determination not to be, Mark felt rough. There was some thing or another that was going down at Gen's work, so she had to leave for a short while. He thought this would be a good opening to get to the pile of work that had been growing over the last couple of weeks with his focus entirely on Justin. Although, after the night at the bar, there was also a renewed sense that he wanted to sink more focus into his relationship so Gen didn't feel like she was being shoved to the side. She wasn't. In fact, even if he wouldn't admit it, he was a bit lost when he realised she wasn't going to be there. That was probably the biggest red flag to the fact he was sick. That, and the fact there mere thought of sex made the nausea worse. Just because he didn't want to be sick, didn't mean he wasn't.

That had been his theory, but he was sitting there on the edge of the bath in the bathroom trying to decide if he trusted himself to move too much. He had his cell phone in his hand, which was how he had succeeded in carrying on a conversation with Gen, where she put her foot down that he was only allowed to be in bed or the bathroom. He was actually attempting to wait for the moment he was sure would come that the sick feeling abated and he could get to his own work. It wasn't, though, and that was when Justin's concerned message came that lead to Mark telling him to come see him. In hindsight, that might not have been the best idea because he was looking exactly how he felt. It was just priority that he reassure his kid when he was worried. Especially when he was worried it was his fault Mark was sick.

Who: Mark Campbell and Justin Carlisle (with Ali Sullivan later)
What: Crunch time
Where: Mark's apartment
When: Near lunch time the day after THIS

Mark was stuffed. He was absolutely knackered. He had already been stressed out to the max with the bundle of not-so-much joy landed on his doorstep them morning before, but there was just a natural internal instinct within him that was worrying about this kid and needed to take care of him the best he could. Sam had been great when he came around, but eventually he had to leave to go to work, so Mark was left on his own to face this. Mostly, the kid just slept. He woke up a couple of times to throw up, but it didn't last long. Mark sat up with him into the night because he was honestly scared he might choke on his own vomit. It was around midnight, though, when he woke up again and when Mark tried to give him some more to drink like Sam told him to, he couldn't keep it down. Mark had to give the kid fucking kudos, he did try to do what Mark was coaxing him to do, but not even water was staying down anymore and fearing he might be badly dehydrated or had alcohol poisoning, or even a bad hit of whatever drug he had taken, Mark had bundled the teenager up into his car and drove him to the hospital.

Justin was pretty badly dehydrated, and the doctor in the ER reassured him he did the right thing. He gave as much information as he could, which wasn't much, so he was relieved when the doctor prompted him a lot regarding Justin's condition. Apparently the sleepiness and the fact Mark was pretty sure the kid hadn't peed since he arrived were the big tellers. Sam came down on his break to check how they were doing, and by then, Justin was hooked up to some IV fluids and given a couple of shots in his butt to help the throwing up and sore head he kept complaining of since they got to the hospital. Mark hadn't left his side, and he was relieved when Justin began to get a little more colour back in his cheeks. It was about five in the morning when they allowed Justin to be discharged, and when the kid fell asleep in the car on the small drive back home, Mark just lifted him out of the car and carried him up to the apartment again.

Why was he doing all this without having distinct confirmation of the boy's paternity? Probably because deep down, Mark already knew the answer. He was an attorney, he would need the confirmation eventually, and especially if it turned out Justin wanted Mark in his life. There would probably be legal battles there, but that was what Mark was put on the earth to do. He really would fight for the kid if that was what Justin wanted. For now, all Mark knew was that the teenager was poorly and feeling bad. He had to do what he had to do. Which was why now, nearing lunch time, Justin was lying in Mark's bed waking up after a long - and thankfully uninterrupted - sleep. Mark's apartment was four bedrooms. One was his, one was a home office, one was a gym, and one was Jamie's room. He had only thought about putting Justin in her room for all of ten seconds when he decided he didn't want to freak the kid out by depositing him in a Pepto pink room full of Disney princesses and Finding Nemo. He had put Justin in his own bed, and then sat down on it next to him to wait it out for the long haul.

Justin was waking up now, though, and Mark was sitting on the bed next to him with his laptop catching up on some work while he had the time, even if he was exhausted and feeling like his eyeballs were hanging out of his head. Justin sat up in the bed groggily, rubbing at his eyes with his hands, strawberry blonde hair sticking up in all directions and some impressively deep creases down one side of his face from the pillow. "Bathroom's just over there, kid. You probably need to piss like a racehorse now after all the fluids they pumped into you. And if you need a dump, don't forget the air freshener," he joke with a faint, tired smirk.

There were two scenarios when her husband pulling a double shift was extremely inconvenient: when she was horny or when she was sick. And fuck, did she wish right now that it was the first scenario. Luckily, their little girl was at her other daddy’s place for a few days and she didn’t have to worry about a boisterous four year old tearing up the house while she had her head inelegantly shoved in the toilet. She was in her undies, hair looking like something that belonged on a Muppet, kneeling on the tiles praying to the porcelain god. This, ladies and gentlemen, was why she hated religion. There was nothing fun about praying for anything, not even metaphorically.

It felt like it was going on forever, and she nearly sent Andrew a text message to abuse him for the sole reason that he wasn’t there to moan to in person... )
