Who: Gen Hart-Campbell, Alicia Sullivan-Connor, Katelynn Stewart and Paris Hart
What: Well-earned celebrations
Where: Casa de Campbell, NYC
When: After this
Gen was in the kitchen when a message came through on her phone. She unplugged it from where it was charging on the windowsill and found a picture message from Mark with a selfie of him and Justin with the caption, Feeling better, Mum. Mark was sitting beside Justin on the hospital bed, giving a thumbs up and Justin was pointing to Mark's thumb. And there were hints of smiles, albeit exhausted and peaky. Still, she could see an improvement in Justin from when she had been up to Four Winds to see him the day before yesterday. He hadn't been awake, so it was a brief visit, Paris and her dad coming with her. Justin had looked like a malnourished corpse, and that was probably being kind. They had all been fearing his death in the last week or so, it was tough to see him looking like it.
She smiled and flicked a message back. Very mom-like, of course. Telling Mark to make sure Justin got some rest. She left it at that because she knew why Mark was up there, what news he was delivering to their son. It was impossible to know from the photo whether Justin had already been delivered the news, but considering he did look a little better in his face, she thought so. She hoped so. She hoped it brought their boy some much-needed peace and relief. He had been fighting those demons literally his whole life, and he barely had a breath of life back in him by the end of her latest stunt. Mark only gave her a brief rundown of what the cunt had written in the letters to Justin, but Mark had always had a colourful vocabulary and all that he said wouldn't have been exaggeration. Gen was glad she didn't have access to the cunt herself or she would've rung her neck with her bare hands.
After all they had been through, their little family (or not so little, when you counted all the extensions to it now) had finally found a place where everyone was content and on the same page together. Gen took to official proper married life like a duck to water, realising this was the only thing she wanted all along but let those voices in her head win the battle for too long. She was Justin's mom in every single way but blood, and even then, he still felt like hers by blood. She felt like she had given birth to him herself, and she wished she had. Then the beautiful boy would never have lived with so much torture and pain. Of course, it wasn't all over with this latest turn of events, but it was a start and it was the crux annihilated so he could move on rather than trying to extinguish the life he didn't know how to live anymore. But he was in good hands and hopefully he started to improve little-by-little.
She tucked her phone into the pocket of Mark's sweatpants she was wearing and brought two large pitchers through to the living room, one labelled 'Preggo Juice'. One was filled with classic Cosmopolitan and the other, the mocktail equivalent of them. "Drink up, ladies! We got cunt burning in hell to celebrate." Netflix was at the ready on the TV, a pile of designer beauty products lined the coffee table for mani/pedis and facials, sweatpants were compulsory attire, and a healthy pile of wedding magazines were stacked by the sofa. "We are long overdue for this girls' night. And I'm long overdue getting to know my new soon-to-be sister-in-law."
Gen received the call from Mark about Justin's mother when she was in the middle of a board meeting that morning. Of course, her Executive Assistant had been told that anything to do with her family right now, she could be disturbed in any meeting. Nothing was more important than her son. She broke down and cried in her office for fifteen minutes after she got the news just from sheer and utter relief, but also joy that her baby was free of this demon now, even if it had left many deep and incurable scars. She had still been sitting there at her desk, feeling a little shellshocked that it had even happened, when Ali called her and she was bringing Kat around that night for a girls' night to celebrate while Mark went to see Justin in Westchester. She had girls' nights before, but this was her first with Kat. She had only just met her and now she was not only getting married to James, but was having his baby. With things suddenly looking up in the Campbell world, it was a perfect idea, as far as Gen was concerned.
She poured some of the mocktail into a cocktail glass for Kat and handed it to her. "Welcome to the funhouse, aka, the Campbell Family. May their dicks forever be the death of us," she joked, smirking as she settled in, nursing her own Cosmo.
