"Either you decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or you go out in the ocean." - Christopher Reeve

It didn't take very long for Leo to know that he wanted to be there for Max when he was feeling shitty. He almost regretted having left Max overnight when he was so sick, but it was a first date, and offering to stay the night might have been a little bit forward. But right now, he couldn't help thinking that being forward was the last thing he should've been worried about, because Max was really fucking sick, and Leo had called him, but he openly admitted to being too weak to get to the door to buzz him up. There was a moment where he'd nearly panicked and started bawling uncontrollably, but that wouldn't help anyone at all, and he managed to keep a grip on his emotions, at least long enough to call 911.

The police arrived, along with an ambulance, and lucky for Leo, they were able to easily get into the building, allowing Leo to lead them to Max's apartment. Again, the police got inside with the help of the building supervisor, and Leo charged down the hallway, calling out Max's name. Dammit, Max was the sweetest guy Leo thought he'd ever met, and they had to start things off with Max being sick. It didn't seem fair, someone so kind and adorable being so sick he could hardly function, and it scared Leo half to death.

And that was when he found Max, lying on the floor of the bathroom, almost completely out of it, and he screamed for the paramedics to come. He was terrified. Max looked like death, and Leo wasn't entirely sure he wasn't dying for real. He was pale and looked awful, and Leo was genuinely terrified. This wasn't the product of a puke bug, no matter how bad it might be.

The paramedics worked quickly, and they let Leo take the ambulance back to the hospital... but once they were there, the doctors couldn't tell him anything. It was a lucky thing that they were taken to Mt. Sinai, because everyone there knew Max's brother-in-law, Andy, and for that, Leo was grateful. But it was only after Max had disappeared down the hallway that Leo pulled his feet up into his chair, wrapping his arms around them and hiding his face to let the tears flow freely down his cheeks.

His heart was breaking for Max, and he couldn't know what was wrong or if he was going to be okay, because he wasn't Max's next of kin. He wasn't even his boyfriend. They'd been on exactly one date, which had gone very well until Max had gotten sicker than shit almost as if out of nowhere. They'd watched a movie together and eaten takeout, just had an entirely relaxed time together, and Leo loved it. There was no pressure, nothing forced, just a fun, simple time... Until Max was suddenly very sick, and Leo was looking after him, much to Max's dismay, given that he was convinced that it was going to be too awkward and Leo wouldn't want to go out with him again. To the contrary, Leo really did want to go out again, but first he wanted to be sure that Max was going to be okay.

He'd grabbed Max's phone from the floor of the bathroom, wanting to have it just in case he needed to get in touch with Max's family and didn't have the numbers. He was lucky to find his sister's number when he scrolled through the contacts, and managing to keep the sobbing under control long enough, he pressed the call button. She answered with, "You okay, Maxi?"

"Ali, you don't know me, but my name is Leo," he said softly, his heart breaking to have to give her this news. "I'm at the hospital with Max. He's really sick, and he passed out in the bathroom. They won't tell me anything, but if you can get here, you should."
