Who: Merlin Larson and Brandon Blake with everyone from the Turner/Casey/Hartley/Larson brood
What: Christmas!
Where: Turner/Casey/Hartley/Larson Residence, NYC
When: Christmas Day (more bendy time, for reasons)

Something had shifted, Merlin just didn't know what. He had fully expected to wake up the morning after Brandon stayed over to find Brandon had left. He had been full of guilt thinking he was imposing the whole time he was there, trying to leave so he wasn't putting Merlin out. Especially after he got upset and broke down in tears. They didn't talk anymore after that. Merlin let him have the quiet he needed to feel upset and grieve, because that was probably what he was trying to deal with on top of everything else. Besides, Merlin didn't think there were any right words to say after that. Brandon ended up falling asleep while he was crying.

But Brandon hadn't left. He was still sleeping soundly beside Merlin when he woke up disoriented that he was in his own bed and not still in London and had a celebrity passed out beside him stealing most of the covers. Unfortunately, Merlin had to get to an early meeting with Caden and he didn't want to interrupt Brandon's sleep when he probably really needed it. Instead, he wrote him a note and left it for him. He told him again to come to Christmas with his family so he wasn't alone and offered to drive him to and from his chemo appointment Christmas morning. He even invited him to stay over for a few days so he didn't have to be alone. He didn't expect Brandon to accept any of that. He didn't expect to hear from him again after he revealed.

Only, Brandon did accept, albeit reluctantly. He sent Merlin an email thanking him extensively for how he helped him, saying not many strangers would sit on a bathroom floor with you in the middle of the night while you were as sick as a dog just so they didn't have to be alone. He also said he thought they needed to talk more because he didn't want to leave things like that. So, Merlin drove him up to Stamford that morning for his treatment and sat with him while the chemo pumped through his veins. They watched Home Alone together on Brandon's iPad until Brandon started to feel really rough and couldn't concentrate.

It was a difficult drive back. There was traffic everywhere being Christmas and a light snowfall meant they had to go slow. Brandon was yet again feeling sick as a dog and Merlin had to stop four times for him to use gas station bathrooms. He gave Brandon multiple loopholes to renege on the family Christmas but Brandon was a trooper and Merlin was glad he did come because it turned out to be a nice day. The whole Turner brood was here from Chicago, Christian's sister, Calli, came and so did Autumn and her mom. It wasn't conventional. Neither Evan nor Brandon could stomach the Christmas dinner so they sat it out together in the living room watching more Christmas movies on Netflix. When Merlin came through to check how Brandon was, he found him crashed out and Evan said he was pretty much out cold five minutes after they started the first movie.

The good thing was that Brandon didn't seem bothered that Merlin's family and extended family would know he was there for Christmas. He just asked that no one take any photos because he knew he looked shit and if they ended up on social media, everyone would assume he was doing hard drugs. Technically, he kind of was. You couldn't get harder than chemo, but that wasn't the point. He was awake when everyone filtered away from the dinner table to relax and catch-up. Merlin made sure Brandon was seated strategically close to the living room door so if he needed the bathroom urgently, he just had to shoot across the hallway.

"How are you feeling?" Merlin asked when he came to sit down beside Brandon, nursing a cup of tea Nana Turner just made for him, offering it up. "This is weak but don't feel you have to force it down. Nana said it helped her friend when she was going through chemo."

Who: Christian Casey and Evan Turner (with Alex Turner later)
What: Sleep Deprived and shit
Where: Infectious Diseases Unit
When: After this

Christian didn't even realise he had fallen asleep until he shot awake without a damn clue where the fuck he was. He had fallen asleep sitting up again, not exactly an unusual thing for a shiftworker though it was more likely to be on the shitter than anywhere else. He was in a chair, in a hospital room. In Evan's hospital room. That's right. He stopped by after his double shift to see if he jagged Evan awake. But considering it had been not much later than sparrow's fart, Evan hadn't been awake when he got there. It was even before the patient breakfast round was delivered. He made the mistake of sitting down and resting his eyes for a minute before he went home to crash. Apparently, his eyes wanted to crash there sitting up and now his neck was killing him.

Evan wasn't in the bed. The blankets were pushed aside messily and he was still trying to get his bearings through a stretch and a yawn when Evan closed the bathroom door and headed back to bed dragging the IV pole with him. Christian checked his watched and discovered it was after one pm. "Fuck, I've been here over five hours? What the fuck?" He rubbed his eyes and sat forward. "Jeez. You should've woken me."

There had been a million and one things playing through Jude's mind for weeks now... for months even at this point. He'd started off by handling those things in the worst possible ways... with partying, drinking, doing drugs, and participating in an orgy that he was near certain had led to fucking unprotected. The choices he'd made filled him with shame and regret, but as his friends and family had pointed out, as he'd slowly pulled his head out of his ass, there was more shame in not seeking out the truth of your status and seeking treatment if necessary than in being Positive in the first place. It had taken really upsetting his little brother to get him to that point, and that part brought Jude more shame than any of this. Actions that hurt only himself were one thing. Actions that hurt the people who he loved were another thing entirely, and one he was struggling to accept that he'd done.

Billy had forced him out of bed after a double shift a few days earlier to hear Reecy sing... )

Who: Alex Hinton and Zoran Jennings
What: Medical attention
Where: Infectious Diseases Unit, Mount Sinai
When: Evening following THIS

Alex had left strict instructions with his nursing staff to page him when Zoran woke up. He had been transferred by ambulance from Montefiore Medical Centre Emergency Room. The doctor there had given Zoran some sedatives to help him sleep, thinking a lot of his issues were exhaustion. Though, Alex had gotten a call from the doctor about what Zoran's recent medical records sent up there showed, and Alex requested he be transferred down to Mount Sinai by ambulance to be admitted here.

With Zoran still knocked out, Zoran's foster parents and legal guardians gave consent for Alex to run whatever tests he needed to. They insisted Zoran would be fine with whatever needed to be done. They just wanted to know he would be okay, and they were really worried about the dizziness and passing out he had done three times in a day. He ran a pile of tests, and then told the nurses to let Zoran sleep and wake in his own time, and Alex would chat to him then.

Alex had already met Zoran when Riley referred him so he could prescribe the PEP for him. The time period for the PEP had ended, but Zoran was still vomiting and his parents couldn't be sure of the last time he had eaten and not vomited after trying. They told him of Richie's suspicions, and at this point, Alex had run all the necessary tests to rule other things out.

"Hi, Zoran," Alex greeting him, coming in with Zoran's chart that contained all the test results. "How are you feeling? Just before anything else, I want to tell you that we've got you on a PEG feed. There's a tube inserted into your gut to supply nutrition. You're really undernourished with the vomiting, and that's going to expose you to all sorts of infections and complications we want to avoid. Your body has gotten to the point where it's been trying to run on empty, so there's no fuel for it to fight to keep you well. You're passing out because the body is trying to shut down to heal itself. Which brings me to my next point..."

Who: Vanessa, Jeff and Alex Hinton
What: Sibling Surprises
Where: Alex's apartment
When: Sunday

Vanessa may have tricked her brothers just a little. Well, a lot. She wanted to surprise them with the news she was coming home all along, but then Adam went all amazing, beautiful, romantic sweetheart on her and now she had two things to surprise them with. The probably was, timing was difficult to nail them together in the same spot. Alex was busy with a typical doctor schedule and being a Primary Physician in the Infectious Diseases Unit. He was also dating, and it sounded like it had gotten pretty serious. She was looking forward to meeting this Travis in real life. Jeff also seemed to be dick-tethered to a guy and, knowing Jeff, he would go into that like a bull at a gate, like he did most things. She had a tiny window of opportunity she had to force them to sit down in front of. She didn't want to be keeping this secret any longer.

She knew that in Alex's living room, they were probably sitting with a pile of junkfood waiting for her to connect the call through Skype on Alex's laptop. They had these three-way Skype conversations a lot since she moved away, and of course with each of them separately. Living in the age of Skype had definitely made her moving away easier, but she had never settled. That probably had a lot to do with missing her family, but also having met Adam right before she left. It hadn't taken long for the regret of leaving to set in.

Arriving at Alex's door with a bag full of presents for her (mostly Disney stuff for Jeff, when she purposefully went there just to get her little brother presents), she knocked on his door, choosing to forgo the buzzer so neither of them were tempted to ignore it while they waited for her call. She was nervous. She had no idea how they would take the news, but inside, the incredible warm thrill of the fact she had just been proposed to with a gorgeous Tiffany's ring was still alive and well.

Who: Alex Hinton, Lewis Sheldon and Lorenzo Chevalier
What: Results
Where: Medical Ward, Mount Sinai
When: Friday night

Alex always felt bad when he had to wake patients up for a consult. Or, at least, get the nurse in charge of that room to wake them. It was one of the downsides of being a doctor on a hectic schedule, and slotting patients in could sometimes be like an epic Tetris game, fitting all the pieces into his already busy time constraints. He had just finished up with a patient on the surgical ward and this was his next stop. Lorenzo seemed barely awake, trying to get his eyes to open more when Alex arrived. The nurse had reported that Lorenzo had slept most of the day in the wake of all the tests he had gone through that Joey in the ER had ordered.

"I'm sorry I had to wake you," Alex apologised when he came into the room with Lorenzo's file. He knew of Lorenzo through mutual friends, but he hadn't personally met him yet. "I'm Alex Hinton, I've just been referred your case after your test results have come back and I wanted to sit and have a little chat with you." Sitting beside Lorenzo was his partner, Lewis. Again, Alex knew of Lewis but this was the first time he had met him. He was apparently a fantastic makeup artist and working with the Footloose crowd. Alex didn't have a creative bone in his body, so he was impressed with anyone who worked in the arts.

Who? Travis Parker-Cleary and Alex Hinton
What? First dates
When? Earlyish evening
Where? Travis' apartment

This wasn't exactly how Travis had foreseen this date going. He'd actually made reservations at a nice restaurant in advance, but when he'd arrived with Alex, the girl at the hostess stand informed him that they had no record of his reservations, and they were booked through until the end of the night. Travis had been really upset, but at the end of the day, Alex was there on a date with him, and he was happy for that. There was no doubt that he was extremely attracted to the doctor, or that he'd been pretty sure he was going to get turned down for this date in the first place. But here they were, and he was happy about it. So he refused to let himself get too bummed out about the restaurant fail.

Instead, they'd ended up deciding to head back to Travis' place, where he would cook them a quick dinner. He was by no means a super great cook, but he could put something that tasted good together, and that was the main concern here. So he and Alex came to be sitting across the small table in Travis's one bedroom apartment, eating spaghetti with sauce that was a mixture of a jar of Ragu with meat that Travis had browned up and added, and a mixture of spices that he added himself. It wasn't anything fancy, but it was dinner, and it would still give them a chance to chat and get to know each other better.

As he spun his fork in the noodles to get a decent bite, Travis looked across the table at Alex. "I'm really sorry about the restaurant thing," he said with a small smile. "I mean, my cooking doesn't exactly compete with nicer New York restaurants, but it's not bad, either... even if most of it's just doctoring up something I already had in a jar or something." He laughed lightly as he looked at the doctor. "How crazy was work with the holidays going on?" he asked, taking a bit of his food as he waited for Alex to answer.

Hi... This might be really awkward, but this is Ajay Bellerose's brother, Travis. I got your number from Jude... I just wanted to message you and tell you thanks for getting me to Jude at the hospital. And to ask if you might want to join me for dinner one night this week? I know it's the holidays, and you probably have plans with your friends and family, so it's fine if you can't... or don't want to. I'll understand. But if you're interested, it's my treat.

Who: Alex Hinton and Grayson Quinn
What: Medical Emergency
Where: Infectious Diseases Clinic, Mount Sinai
When: Early hours of the morning, after THIS

Alex's nightshift had started so quietly that he was almost lulled into a false sense of security that he might get a full night of just doing his rounds and catching up on case notes. But then he had been paged to the ER (where all urgent cases had to present before being referred on to the appropriate specialists. He had called in on the page and the intake nurse told him that there was a presentation with a condom breakage with one partner a HIV Positive patient. Really not uncommon, but scary and confronting for the patient, nonetheless. It was the ones who knew and sought the vital medical treatment ASAP that were the lucky ones. There were plenty of people out there sleeping with people they didn't know were Positive and didn't have the luxury of knowing they were in danger. An ironic 'luxury', but it really should be thought of as a blessing rather than a curse.

He had gone straight to the Infectious Diseases Clinic, where patients were taken from the ER to wait for the doctor. Tonight, it was Alex's turn to be on-call. The clinic wasn't open 24/7, but doctors were on-call for cases like this. But as soon as he arrived in the clinic and found Riley standing in there with a guy wasn't directly familiar with, he baulked and his shoes even squeaked on the floor with how abruptly he froze. But he quickly regained his professionalism, however before he even opened his mouth to introduce himself to the patient, Riley was leaving the room. He looked terrible. In fact, they both looked awful and this was one of the hard parts of his job.

He checked the patient file. "Grayson, is it? I'm Dr Hinton, but please, call me Alex. Riley's a friend of mine. Don't get upset about him leaving, I would have asked him to step out anyway. It's just protocol he's really aware of..." he tried to reassure the poor guy. But he also knew Riley, and he could guess where his mind was right now. He couldn't face going through this process again when his own experience with it had been horrific.

Who: Alex Hinton and Austin Watson-Shaw
What: Cards on the table
Where: Mount Sinai Hospital
When: After THIS and THIS

There was no right place to meet Austin and have this conversation, but Alex just knew he couldn't do it in Beau's room. Not just because he knew how distracted Austin would be by Beau, but out of simple respect for Beau above anything else. Alex had a really hectic night at work. He had pulled a double, an afternoon in the Infectious Diseases Clinic the day before with scheduled appointments with his patients, and then a nightshift in the isolation ward when a staff member called in sick. Sleep was the last thing on his mind. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep until he at least faced this conversation with Austin.

They had settled on one of the quiet waiting areas, tucked away in a corner and out of earshot of the nearest thoroughfare. He could have used one of the family rooms, but it didn't feel right either. Nowhere felt right, but at least this was near a coffee cart where he could get a latte to hot but probably not be able to actually stomach drinking. He was still in his scrubs when he arrived to meet Austin, who was already there. Alex just sighed and took the armchair across from Austin with a sigh.

"I need to talk to you about something that's probably going to change everything for you," he told him quietly. "I'm not even sure I should be talking to you about it, but I'm trusting my gut feeling."

How easy it was to make a promise to someone you cared about well in advance of having to face fulfilling it. Not that it had been an easy promise for Alex to make by any means. He remembered the evening so clearly that it was like it had etched away a portion of his brain to simply remain there forever. He had gone to visit Beau, hearing that he was having a string of bad days in the wake of a rough chemo round. 'Rough' was a loose description, though. Beau was a hell of a fighter, but even the strongest fighters could lose sometimes. He had been putting up a brave face for his husband and his family... something Alex knew was a sacrifice Beau would never not make for them, even if it wasn't necessary.

It was pouring rain that night too. Alex had gotten soaked just from the short sprint from the cab to the apartment block where Beau lived now... )

What: The awkward moment when you walk right into an awkward moment
Where: Renal Unit, Mount Sinai
When: Tuesday lunch time

True to his word by text, when Beau hadn't come to meet him for lunch, Alex went looking for him. He knew Beau was assigned to the Renal Unit for a few weeks at least. It worked out well because Alex had a patient on the unit who was suffering kidney disease as a complication of not taking better care of himself with his HIV. After Alex checked on his patient and wrote up his consultant notes in the file, he went to track Beau down and found him heading to the last patient on his rounds. "I told you I wouldn't let you avoid me," Alex reminded him, calling out just a little up the corridor to get Beau's attention right before he was about to turn into the patient's room.

He sped up a little to catch up with Beau, and wasn't at all surprised to find himself on the end of an epic bitchglare followed by Beau turning around to tell him to piss off... in a hushed voice through clenched teeth so patients wouldn't hear of course. "You're entitled to your lunch break. I can wait until you're done with your last patient," he told him and walked right up behind Beau so he couldn't falter in his professionalism now they were in sight through the window of the last patient's room. If Beau tried to turn again and cuss him out again, he would either slam right into Alex or they would be surely spotted. What Alex didn't expect, however, was Beau to stop short so quickly and so abruptly in the doorway that Alex slammed into him anyway and nearly knocked Beau over. Talk about professionalism... not.

Who: Alex Hinton and Beau Watson
What: I never want to see you unhappy
Where: The Chelsea @ Atlantic City
When: About three nights following Beau's split with Austin

Alex had no reason to think hooking up with Beau came with baggage. Beau was being just like he always was - living for the moment, somewhat mischievous, devil may care attitude. Sure, it was ultimately what had caused their split in the first place, but it wasn't hurting anyone if they had a bit of fun again together now, right? Alex was in Atlantic City for a wedding of one the nurses he worked with. He hadn't been able to make his bachelor party the week before because of his roster at work, and there was no way he could miss the wedding. He had been honoured to receive the invite, and the guy had jokingly teased that three guys in his wedding party were gay and single. Alex had just laughed it off. He might be into hooking up while he was in the seaside city, but he didn't have much intentions of looking for the love of his life. He hadn't even been sure that was nothing but a fallacy since things ended with Beau. Things there never quite properly gelled but it was the closest he had ever come to the real deal, he was sure of it. Besides their parents happy marriage, the Hinton family seemed to be seriously unlucky in figuring relationships out... save for their cousin, Logan, who was engaged and headed for marriage.

His friend's wedding was later that night, and it was now the early hours of the morning. The night before had been a turn of events Alex just could never have anticipated. He hadn't actually seen much of Beau in the past couple of months. Like Dan, Alex had been away at the medical conference for four weeks, so he was a little out of the loop on anything that was going down. What he had heard was that Beau was dating someone, and the someone wasn't Liam. So, when Alex had been sitting at the bar of the hotel having a drink the evening before and Beau came up beside him with Liam, confusion was pretty much inevitable. Turns out, they weren't there on a date at all. When Liam went to take a call off 'his boyfriend', apparently called Damien, Beau invited Alex to join him for a couple of drinks, explaining that Liam would be gone for ages on the phone.

It really was just a couple of drinks... )
