Who: Callum MacDonald with Ethan Marshall
What: Twin Sense
Where: Ethan's place
When: After THIS

Knowing what day it was tomorrow, Callum had struggled to get to sleep. He tried not to toss and turn too much, because Ethan was crashed out and he didn't want to wake him. He got up twice, and then went back to bed. Eventually, he fell into a restless sleep cuddled up into Ethan's side. He was glad that Ethan was okay with physical contact, because it would be completely understandable if he wasn't. The last couple of days, Callum had just stayed close to him and they spent a lot of time just being together and Callum reassuring him he was okay with however Ethan needed to take things. Now and again, he tried sending Casey some texts, but they all went unanswered.

There was one thing Callum and Casey couldn't really explain - the Twin Sense... )

Who: Callum MacDonald and Ethan Marshall
What: Time to talk
Where: Mount Sinai and beyond
When: Monday night

Talking to Richie had - to say the least - put a fire under Callum's ass to talk to Ethan. The new doctor knew who Ethan was and blatantly told Callum if he didn't talk to him about what was bothering him, he would go and outright ask him if he had 'dick issues'. If ever there was something that would get Callum's finger out, it was that. He didn't want Ethan to think he was running around whining about the lack of progression in their relationship. Anyway, Casey was still not talking to him, so Callum didn't want to feel left out in the cold anymore than he already was. He was always out of sorts when he was having issues with his twin. It was like nothing felt right.

So, instead of going back to Harvard for class, Callum was ditching under the ruse of being ill and had stayed in New York. Richie was right. He needed to just grab his balls and talk to Ethan. He should be able to talk to him, that was a bit part of what relationships were about. Even if nothing else, Callum just wanted to spend time with Ethan and maybe lament his miseries with his twin. Not to mention the fact it was their dad's birthday this week and that was hard. It would probably never not be hard, but he didn't at all want to be alone this week. Physically or emotionally.

Which was why he was waiting outside the hospital for Ethan to finish his shift. Ethan thought he was in Boston, so he wouldn't be expecting him there at all. Callum was standing there waiting with his hands in his pockets and gave Ethan a smile when he exited the hospital. "Hey," he greeted him with an air of sheepishness

Callum was trying to get his brain to focus on the filmography magazine he had brought with him to read while he waited for his doctor's appointment. Casey had made a therapist appointment for the same time so they only needed to make one trip to the hospital, but that meant Callum was left to wait on his own and he wasn't the most patient of people in the world. Not by a long shot. He had chosen not to sit in the waiting room because, having been as sick as he was and still recovering, he didn't want to catch anything else and his head still constantly sore to put up with kids screaming and people bemoaning their various ailments.

Instead, he told the clinic's receptionist that he was just going to wait on the row of seats lining the wall of the corridor just outside of the clinic. The seats weren't comfortable and considering he was still ill, he had that all-over ache to contend with too. He wanted to be back at the apartment in bed, where he had been spending most of his time since he was discharged from hospital and strictly told to rest... the condition he was let out sooner than he should have been.

He just happened to look up while he wet his finger to flip the page of the magazine and there was Ethan, coming down the hall in his labcoat with two other doctors. Callum wasn't shy, and because he wasn't sure when he would get another chance like this falling in his lap, he stood up before the posse of doctors passed. "Ethan," he said to catch the, let's be real, smoking hot doctor's attention. Hopefully he wasn't in the middle of some serious business doctor pow-wow that couldn't be interrupted. He wanted to carpe diem a little here, but he didn't want to be a rude prick about it.

So, this was going to be a heavy case to be working on. Not that all of Ethan's patients weren't heavy cases, but this one was another special case. One of Jesse's new brothers, a twin, had presented with concerning symptoms indicating infection. Because he had literally just gotten off the plane from Africa, Alex's call was to put him straight into isolation in case he was highly infectious. They also did a range of blood tests on his twin, who had close exposure to him since he arrived back on US soil. All of Casey's test came back clear.

Callum, however, had bacterial encephalitis caused by malaria. Which meant that he didn't need to be in isolated, but he was still seriously sick and needed treatment. The encephalitis meant he had to be joint-managed with neuro so Ethan was assigned his case. It was just incredibly strange with Jesse being his best friend, and it was Ethan who discovered the error in his paternal bloodline. As a result of that, Jesse discovered he had a whole other family, including twin brothers and a sister. Ethan knew it was a mindfuck for him, and now Callum was ill, it would be extra stress.

Callum had been in and out of consciousness. The dangerously high fever had caused him to hallucinate, and there was a minor seizure when he first presented. He was awake now and Ethan was simply checking how he was doing so he could let Jesse and his family know his progress. This was the first time Ethan was seeing him while he was awake, though.

"Hi, Callum. My name's Ethan. I'm your neurologist assigned to you. I'm also Jesse's best friend, if that at all helps ease your mind about any of this," he told him gently.

What: Great big WTF moment
Where: Neurology Unit, Mount Sinai
When: Friday morning

Days like this, Jace wished he was allowed to be a coffee drinker. Stress exhausted him, but he wouldn't be anywhere besides the hospital with Jesse once again admitted after a seizure. There was no particular reason why his condition had exacerbated in the last couple of weeks. Sometimes, with epilepsy, that could just happen. This time, Jace was feeling beyond guilty and beating himself up inside. Jesse had been out of hospital just under a week and he seemed to be getting back on his feet. The night before, Christian had been on a nightshift and Evan had been paged into work on an emergency consult. That was okay, because Nana had found a place to live nearby, and Jace and Jesse knew she could be called if anything happened.

Which it did. Jace woke up about four, immediately aware he was in bed alone. Of course, he panicked, and with good cause. Jesse was out cold on the bathroom floor and Jace couldn't wake him up. His watch had smashed on the tiles when he fell, and that was how he saw it would have been just after midnight (on Jesse's birthday) it happened. Jesse always wore his watch, even to bed, in case Jace had a fit and he could time it no matter where it happened. Jace called his Nana in a panic, who called 911 for him and came right over. Jace had really convinced himself Jesse was dead. That was why he was now standing there exhausted, leaning against the wall at the vending machine trying to talk himself out of getting a coffee. That would just be counter-productive.

"Fuck," he mumbled and instead pushed the option for tea, which would taste like shit but he couldn't take his own meds on an empty stomach. This was the very much not-glamorous part of being in a marriage where both of them had a serious illness. While Jace had a lot of pride in now officially being Jesse's next-of-kin, the decision maker when Jesse was too ill to consent anything himself, it was stressful and still taking Jace some getting used to.

Tried to give a big brother heads-up and didn't get an answer again.

If anyone wants to know, Jace, Ethan, Calvin, Taylor and I are in Atlantic City for the night. And Jace is high on pot. Don't say I didn't try to warn you.

It was the booth furthest at the back of the cafeteria in the corner. Ethan put his cell phone down on the table and gave Calvin, who was sitting across from him, a small, wry smile. "I'm really sorry about this. 'Let's have a first date in a hospital cafeteria', said no one ever," he lamented. "I just couldn't be anywhere else right now. I don't want to crowd them all, but I just need to be on stand-by for Jesse. As much as they deal with this stuff all the time, it never makes it easier."

This was exactly what their first date had amounted to. They had a nice dinner booked at a restaurant overlooking the Hudson, and then they were going to see a movie. But before they even ordered their meals, Jesse called and told him what happened on the flight. He sounded terrible. Panicked, tired, worried, scared. Who could blame him? Ethan was pretty sure he would fall apart at the seams if he was in Jesse's shoes. But Ethan had told Calvin he really needed to go to the hospital because it was serious business until Jace began to come around again. Calvin was completely supportive and drove Ethan over, where they were now sat having a drink together to warm up. "If you just want to cut your losses and forget this happened, I'll completely understand," he offered, wrapping his hands around the mug of tea sitting in front of him.

It was late now, and Ethan was still at the hospital visiting with Jesse. A little while ago, Jesse had tried to coax Jace to go home to bed with Eddie, but Jace had flat out refused (apparently he could be a stubborn bitch when he felt like it). Since hearing Jesse had a fit last time he left the hospital, Jace seemed determined not to leave yet, and instead had given over Jesse's apartment key to Eddie and told him to go home and hit the hay, explaining where the blankets and pillows were for the sofa bed, though Evan would probably be home with Christian by that point. Eddie had been smirking at his childhood friend by that point, obviously knowing there was no point trying to get Jace to cooperate. Apparently Jace's stubborn streak wasn't a new thing.

Shortly after Eddie left, Jace made the mistake of sitting down in the recliner, which each private room had, and fell asleep. That left Ethan and Jesse the last men standing, and Ethan gave Jesse a smirk of his own when he saw Jesse looking at Jace in concern. "It's just because he loves you, buddy. He wasn't there when your appendix burst, and now he realises he wasn't there when you had a small fit. Just humour him. Evan will come in soon enough to tough love him home to bed."

Who: Ethan Marshall, Eddie Bronson, Jace Turner and Jesse Hartley
What: Extended networks
Where: Surgical Unit, Mount Sinai
When: Thursday evening

Ethan had just finished a loooooooooong double shift. Emphasis on the long. He worked a day and an evening shift because someone else had called in sick and he was cool with filling in. He had been in LA for the past week on a conference for Neurology residents, something the hospital paid for so he had jumped at the chance to go. But it meant he missed the whole ordeal one of his closest mates, Jesse, had gone through. Not just his fit on the sidewalk in the middle of busy Manhattan (giving himself a concussion in the process) but also the exploding appendix. Ethan felt bad, but when he had looked in on Jesse earlier during his dinner break, Jesse had been out like a light, so he promised himself he would visit before he went home.

He was still in his scrubs and lab coat, but this wasn't his unit. He was definitely off the clock for now. If Jesse was awake, it would be likely Jace would be there with him. Arriving at the door of Jesse's private room, he knocked softly on the doorframe with a sympathetic smile. "What's this I hear about you going exploding internal organs in my absence?" he asked Jesse, who was still looking pretty worse for wear with yellowing bruises on his face and some visible sutures on the side of his forehead. Jace was sitting on the side of his bed holding his hand, but as soon as Ethan stepped into the room, he realised someone else was there standing by the side of the bed. Whoever it was had probably just arrived, maybe with Jace, and hadn't taken a seat yet.

It caught Ethan's attention and soon he and the stranger were locking gazes. Ethan had no idea who he was, so he just smiled. "If this is a bad time, I can come back?"
