When his doorbell sounded, Austin shot awake with a jolt. He was lying on his stomach, one arm looped around a naked Beau asleep in the bed next to him. He propped himself up on his hand, groggily peering around through squinted eyes to try and figure out what had woken him. His immediate thought was that Beau had woken him for some reason, which made his gut do a little flip-flop to even think of. He didn't know if he could tell Beau this, but ever since Beau told him he had clinical depression and had contemplated ending his life, that was a worry hanging over his heart. Even if Beau reassured him he had no intentions of acting on the thoughts and his psych treatment had been successful in controlling them.

He was careful to shift in the bed so Beau didn't wake up and blearily flopped out of bed to grab his robe and face mask. He was trying to messily tie the robe's sash around his waist when he answered the door, again just expecting it to be a delivery driver. At the sight of his masked twin brother, Angel, Austin squeaked in surprise. "Oh my god!" He grabbed his twin in a smooshing reflexive hug because it had been months since he had seen him in person and it was either that or burst into tears at seeing him.

"You're here! Fuck, why are you here?" he quickly added, lightly shoving Angel back to arm's length so he could assess if he was okay or not. Then he yanked him back into the squeezing hug, social-distancing be damned.

Damien was in his absolute fucking element. Justin was bringing the house down and Damian was loving every minute of watching from the edge of the stage. His supporting act set to open for Justin had been a huge hit and he just got word that the entire stock of his album had sold out at the merch stand. He wished he had listened to Justin, who told him to bring more. He had been so sure the audience was only there for Justin and he was just along for the ride to get exposure to hopefully pull him from the indie market to mainstream. During the whole tour, he was booked to join Justin on various media commitments. He also knew everything Justin had planned for his show and he was still blown away.

Or at least… so he thought he knew everything. After the last big number where Justin danced with his backup dancers led by Harry and Brody, the dancers all piled off and Justin took his microphone from the stand when the setlist showed a brief break and costume change at this point.

Justin took one of his earpieces from his ear so he could hear the crowd and the lights went up so he could see at least the first few rows of the audience, who were screaming and cheering... )

Who: Rose Shaw and Damien Larson
What: Catching up
Where: Shaw & Watson home, Upper East Side
When: Tuesday morning

Rose was going okay with her treatment. In the grander scheme of things, she had been lucky with the chemo. She had good days, and usually was only at her worst in the few days following a treatment. In the meantime, she had lost her hair, which was fine. She expected that. It hadn't taken her long to turn to a wig for the pure and simple reason, she didn't want to frighten Daisy not having hair. However, to spice things up, she had gone brunette just for the hell of it. She and Angel together had made the choice to get a full-time housekeeper when Rose was diagnosed with ovarian cancer that at spread to her uterus. Because of the seriousness of the operation she had undergone, being a total hysterectomy, Angel wanted them to worry about the things that mattered. He had plenty of cash, they could afford staff. Housekeeper it was, and Daisy was put into care with Nat for three days a week, for about 5 hours each day just to give Rose a rest.

They couldn't ignore the fact either that Angel had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. As much as he wanted to take the entirety of the reigns when Rose fell ill, he needed to be careful of his own health. Today was one of his bad days and he was bedridden, but Daisy didn't have daycare that day, and with Rose not feeling so bad herself, she was home with her little girl while somewhere on the other side of the spacious apartment, Beau and Austin were juggling new daddy duties with little Elliott. The last few days, Rose hadn't been feeling well and had a lot of time resting, but she didn't want to stay in bed when she felt better.

Daisy, who at nearly two years old now, wasn't a baby anymore, but a lively toddler. She was walking well for her age and had her little toddler babbles. She knew some words, and was communicating with what she wanted and didn't. Like many toddlers, 'NO' was one of her favourite words. She was such a good little girl, though. She seemed to have an understanding that mommy was sick on some level, or maybe she was just a pleasant and well-behaved baby in general. She always had been.

That morning, Rose was resting on the sofa with Daisy on her lap watching the Frozen sing-a-long DVDs on the huge TV on the wall. The doorbell rang, and soon, the housekeeper came through and told Rose she had a visitor. Her eyebrows rose in surprise because she hadn't been expecting anyone. They had been keeping the visitors to the minimum with a newborn in the house. "Okay, send them through," she agreed with a smile.

When: Monday evening

As luck would have it, Angela went into labour and gave birth to little Elliott when Rose was having a break in her chemo. It was still ongoing, but she was one of the fortunate ones that it was a low dose, spread out over time. They were getting results, and she just had to keep on going with it. Cancer didn't just disappear overnight. What it meant was that she was well enough to come visit the baby, and she didn't want to wait any longer. Because he was premature, they had to keep him in a little longer than a general newborn. But that was okay, he was in the best hands he could be.

Using the brief window of opportunity with Rose and Angel arriving, Beau and Austin were taking a quick dash home to shower before they were coming back. They were allowed to stay with him because of the circumstances. Angela was still in but would be going home the following day, so Rose wanted to drop in to see her before they left. It couldn't be easy what she was going through.

Daisy had fallen asleep in Angel's arms on the elevator ride up to the Maternity floor. She hadn't wanted to go into her stroller from the car and the only way they could stop a scream-fest was Angel nursing her. She hadn't taken a nap that afternoon, so she was grizzly and cranky. Angel was just carefully putting her into the stroller to tuck her in. Rose was at the newborn's crib in a flash, tenderly scooping him up into her arms with a grin. "Aren't you the most beautiful little man in the entire world?" she cooed. He was so tiny. She had to remember this couldn't make her clucky.

"Whatever else is unsure in this stinking dunghill of a world a mother’s love is not." - James Joyce

‘Why don’t you get a nanny?’ One simple question, and Angel had lost his shit and punched an innocent acquaintance of a friend of a friend of a work colleague… right in front of a paparazzi armed with a camera he hadn’t seen. In fact, the only way he knew it had been there was the picture was spread all over the tabloids by the next day. All he wanted to do was punch the shit out of more fuckers. Maybe his patience was worn a lot more thin for this sort of stuff than he usually would be, but all things considered, how could anyone be surprised at that?

The only people who knew the depth of Angel’s stress right now were his family and closest friends, though. This wasn’t something anyone wanted spread all around and made public property... )

Who: Rose Shaw and Will Jackson
What: Heart-to-Heart
Where: Oncology Unit, Mount Sinai
When: Tuesday morning

There was going to be no waiting. Rose had her appointment with Tara that morning, first thing. It had been a real slog to get Angel up at 7 to be at the hospital at 8, but he just managed. He was looking like hell, but he was there for her. Tara had results from the tests that Haley had already ordered for Rose, and some more from other tests that had been done once the scan was showing up the nastiness on it. Tara admitted Rose to the Oncology Unit straight away, and she wanted her in surgery later that afternoon. There was no sense waiting if Rose was confident in her decision here.

They were taking it all. Rose was pretty sure the best way to tackle this was to not give her time to think on it. She was terrified. She didn't want to have just her ovaries taken, and the results of that coming back saying the cells had spread so they had to go in to take it all anyway. What was the point in that? It felt like it would delay things, and Tara absolutely confirmed that any waiting on something like this afforded a risk of spreading. If they did the first surgery, and realised they needed the second, the cells could already spread to the lymph nodes to her stomach, to any of that, and it would be way more serious. Doing the total hysterectomy now, it would capture any tumours already there and any tumours potentially left by a smaller surgery too.

Angel was just not coping, though. He was exhausted and Daisy had been screaming the place down. Rose called Austin and asked him to take Angel and Daisy home for a few more hours sleep, and they could come back before Rose went into surgery. There was no point them all there waiting things out. When you were a wife and mommy, you didn't stop being just that if you were dealing with other stuff. It was only a few hours. Hopefully she wouldn't completely lose her shit in the meantime.

Being a people person, she waiting until they got her into a gown and hooked her up to pre-surgery fluids to keep her hydrated while she had been fasting, and she went to find Billy and Ajay in the chemo wing. She sat with them and chatted to Ajay while poor Billy slept. He had the look to him Beau got when the chemo started to wreck you to the point it took longer and longer to bounce back. But Ajay seemed optimistic that after this final month, Billy might get his own remission gold star.

Then it was time for Billy to go home, and he was so sick. Rose had experience taking care of Beau after chemo, but it was quite sobering for her to realise there was a chance this might be her soon. If the surgery didn't cockblock it ending up in other parts of her body. Being alone then, she nearly folded and called Austin to bring Angel and Daisy back to her.

That was what she was about to do making her way back to her room pushing her IV pole. But she passed the room across from her and not meaning to be nosey, she glanced in and stopped, doubling back. "Will?"

Keep Holding On

I've always been a pretty simple person. I'm a fan of honesty and loyalty, not money and materialism. I value love and family, not flash and hype. There was no one more shocked than me when a beautiful, yet very popular, musician wanted to sweep me off my feet just because I accidentally over-fangirled him one day. It's an hilarious story these days, no doubt. He was the best and most amazing thing that ever happened to me. He wasn't just talented, but he was a beautiful soul, with a beautiful smile and a huge heart. Those were all the things I cherished, and those were the things that prevented me from not falling in love with him.

That he didn't need me to change to fit into his celebrity whirlwind lifestyle. He wanted me exactly as I came, and because of that, fuck did we have a lot of fun together... )

Who? Damien Larson and Rose Shaw
What? We all need somebody to lean on
When? After hearing from Max
Where? The Watson-Shaw/Shaw place

Damien had been struggling since hearing from Max with the knowledge of what Rosie was going through. It was a terrifying thing to be faced with the possibility of cancer, and then to have to lose a part of you that literally made you physically the gender you were, regardless of how much social justice warriors might go off on the fact that gender wasn't based on your body, and you didn't need to feel less of your gender because of losing a sex organ. It didn't change the fact that losing a sex organ against your will wasn't an easy thing, because it hit you at the core of who you were.

It was that, and Max's statement that they needed to do this as a group of friends, that had stuck with Damien and brought him here, to Rosie's house. He needed to see her, because she had never stopped being there for the people she loved, and she deserved to have the people she loved here to support her. He was buzzed up to the apartment, and when Rosie opened the door, he didn't speak right away. Instead, he just moved forward to envelope her in a warm, but gentle hug.

The text from Angel had scared the living fuck out of Austin. Tara was a friend of their family, having been Beau's supervisor when he was an intern, but Angel's text had said that he was waiting and he wouldn't leave until he got a chance to talk to Tara. An oncologist. Which had immediately set off warning bells in Austin's head. He had nearly lost his husband to cancer. This was something he didn't fuck with.

He'd run through the hallways of the hospital to the Oncology Ward where he found Angel sitting in one of the waiting room chairs looking like hell. He made his way to his brother immediately, worry written in every line of his face. "AJ?" he said softly, taking a seat next to his brother in another chair. "What's going on? Why are we at the hospital?"

Who: Max Sullivan and Rose Shaw
What: Friends Forever
Where: Ali and Andrew's home
When: Saturday

Lately, Max was spending most of his time lying down. He slept a lot, but when he wasn't sleeping and trying to get back on his feet, he kept having these dives in his blood sugar that would make him dizzy, or outright cause him to pass out. Not at all uncommon (apparently) considering how sick he was pre-diagnosis and his body now had to adjust to being balanced out. He had to, in turn, adjust to a whole new way of living. But they were certainly seeing why it was recommended he didn't go home to his lonely little apartment alone when he was discharged.

That day, Rosie was coming to visit. She said she had an appointment in the morning, but she would be over with Daisy afterwards. Angel had a work commitment about a new album he had written for Daisy and it was getting close to recording it. You wouldn't hear Max turning down any offers of visitors. He was a people person and being sick sucked. He liked company, but he knew his friends were busy. They had lives, and babysitting him wasn't part of it. Needless to say, he was jumping out of his skin from excitement about seeing Rosie and his little honorary niece, Daisy. She was just as beautiful and adorable as his own biological niece and nephew. Max loved kids to bits.

But he had dropped off into a snooze waiting for her to come. He was on the sofa with a throw rug over him, one leg hanging over the edge where he had dropped the TV remote on the floor when he dozed off. "Maxi, Rosie's here," he heard infiltrate his nap with a soft shake of his shoulder. He woke up, looking around blearily to find Andy there with Jack on his hip. Max couldn't be left alone, but he was going to take Jack for a walk in the park while Rose visited. Sunshine was at her dad's because it was his weekend with her.

Fuck this

I don’t like this feeling. The one that feels right down deep inside places in your heart you didn’t know existed. The fear that you’re never going to feel okay again. I’m not unhappy. That’s never been the question. Ever since I met Angel, I’ve been happier than I ever thought a human could be. He’s the most beautiful person I’ve ever met, and he wanted to marry me. Sure, we took our damn time getting there, but life has a way of throwing up these roadblocks in front of you. Maybe we need those to remind us how priceless and cherished love and family should be.

He’s a beautiful daddy to our little girl too... )

Who: Rose and Angel Shaw
What: Honeymoon, and stuff
Where: Tampa Bay, Florida
When: Very early Sunday morning

It had been a week now since Rose's miscarriage, and an incredibly emotional one at that. Probably the most emotional week of her entire life, and therefore exhausting. The wedding had been on Friday, and it was now Sunday. Friday evening, they had flown down to Florida with Rose's parents and spent the night at the Gresham family home in Jacksonville. Rose was up all night talking to her mom about everything, and touching on the miscarriage because she had been struggling to talk much about it. She had needed that time with her mom, but Angel had still another surprise up his sleeve yet.

The afternoon before, they hired a car and drove to Tampa Bay where he had a beautiful modern beach house awaiting them for a honeymoon. Maybe it wasn't usual practice to bring a child along for a honeymoon, but Daisy was with them because neither of them would have it any other way. Besides the fact, this soon after the miscarriage with complications, Rose couldn't have sex. That didn't mean they hadn't done other things their wedding night just because of how much they needed to show their love to each other, but the rest of it would wait until she was ready.

It was very early Sunday morning now, and Rose was standing out on one of the balconies wrapped in a soft silk bathrobe watching the sunrise. She had a lot on her mind, and while she watching and let everything mull over in her head, she was absentmindedly brushing her thumb over her wedding ring, adjusting to how it felt on her finger.

• Heart to Heart, James Blunt

There had to have been other brides somewhere, sometimes, that pretty much cried through their entire wedding. It wasn't the best look in the world, but in the future, looking back at all the amazing photos and video, Rose would emphatically blame residual hormones. She had cried a lot, on and off, for almost a week but these tears were different. These were tears when she was literally speechless with shocked surprise, knowing once she arrived at Jane's Carousel with her dad and Daisy in her arms that Angel, in all of four days, had pulled off this entire event just to make it special for her.

Confusion had been the first thing she was feeling. The car was driving them in a completely different direction from City Hall... )

Brooklyn Bridge

It was hard to feel like the ache inside that had taken residence since Mother’s Day would go away. When your whole family were in pain and there was nothing you could do but ride it out, the simplest of tasks took a lot of energy. But Angel was determined to do whatever it took to make today as perfect for his bride as he could. They had waited a year and a half for this. Ultimately, it didn’t matter how, it just mattered that it was special and memorable.

What? A gift for the bride
When? Before Angel and Rosie's wedding
Where? Their apartment

It had been a painful few days in the Watson-Shaw-Gresham household. There was absolutely no doubt of that. But in the midst of all of it, Rosie and Angel had decided that it was time for them to officially tie the knot. It had been some soul searching that led to the choice, but what of this whole thing wasn't soul searching? He and Beau had been doing the same thing, just as Rosie and Angel were, only on a different topic. But Austin couldn't help being happy for his twin and Rosie tying the knot. There was pain and mourning, no doubt, but also hope and joy.

Originally, the plan had been a huge double wedding with Angel and Rosie getting married and Austin and Beau renewing their vows, but Rosie and Angel needed this to be something special for them, and Austin and Beau were more than understanding... In fact, they were both happy for them that they'd chosen to do this for themselves. But before it was all said and done, Austin wanted to talk to Rosie.

He found her in the living room with Daisy cuddled on her lap, Angel having needed a nap, and took a seat next to her, a soft smile crossing his face as he tickled the bottom of Daisy's little foot. "Hi, darling," he said, kissing her on the cheek.

Toutes les choses sont difficiles avant d'être faciles (All things are difficult before they are easy)

It was a year and a half ago that Angel proposed to Rose on her birthday in Venice. Back then, the likelihood of a huge, bright, fun wedding with masses of fantastic music would have been a given. But it wasn’t long after their epic “oops” moment discovering that she was accidentally pregnant, probably as a result of an extremely horny, passionate and drunk encounter in the back of a limo.

Then they decided to wait until the baby was born so he or she could be at their wedding... )

Rose knew she was one of the luckiest chicks in the whole world. She didn't just have an amazing fiancé who was gorgeous, talented, and treated her like she was a princess, but she also had two honorary brothers in Beau and Austin, who shared the massive loft apartment with her, Angel, and their baby daughter, Daisy. Maybe it was a bit of a crazy, unconventional family construction, but she wouldn't have it any other way. Which is exactly why she knew deep within her heart that she had to be Austin and Beau's surrogate when they wanted to have a baby. They would make just as amazing fathers as Angel was.

What it culminated in was a surprise first Mother's Day party for her, under the guise of being a birthday party for Daisy... )

What: Let's talk about... babies
Where: @ home
When: Friday evening

Rose had spent the day shopping her heart out with her sisters to try to finish her Christmas shopping. It was Daisy's first Christmas, and the baby girl was going to be spoiled to the max, without a shadow of a doubt. Rose came from a huge family, and Daisy was the first grandchild, though their parents had adopted little Ciaran as one too because it was uncertain whether Julie and Euan would be able to have any of his own. He had frozen his sperm before he started chemo, but with Julie having had a bad miscarriage, nothing was certain. Life was never certain. They had all learned that the very hard way, but they were more than welcoming a lovely, celebratory Christmas now that Beau had gone into remission and he was back home with them.

Beau, however, had never had the chance to freeze his sperm. He had just been a boy the first time he fell ill with leukemia, so it was never a consideration. Recently, though, it had come to light that he wanted children and Austin wanted them too once he knew Beau wanted them. It had lead to Rose valiantly offering her uterus to them as a surrogate with a donor egg (Austin was Angel's brother, so they didn't want to complicate anything by Beau and Austin's child being Daisy's biological sibling). Nothing had been set in stone, and things had gotten hectic when Angel was studying and rehearsing for the charity Christmas show which turned out to be a nightmare with what happened to Lance.

They had finished dinner, and Jesse, who had been here for the duration of the afternoon helping Beau with showering, medication, feeding, had left for the day to go back home to Jace and his family. Daisy had been fussy so they ordered takeout instead of worrying about cooking. She was now bathed and dressed for bed, but it was a little too early to put her down when she was fussy like this because she wouldn't settle. Beau was sat in one of the recliner seats of the sofa in his pyjamas wrapped in blankets while Austin and Angel argued back and forth about what movie to watch.

Rose came into the living room nursing Daisy, who was in her new jammies after spending the day in Uncle Beau's choice of outfit. She handed her to Angel, who wrapped his arms around her and gave her a kiss. "I have a better idea. Let's talk about babies," she said, taking the remote off Austin and turning the volume on the TV down a little. "All cards on the table, or Daisy will be in her graduation robes before it comes up again and I'm not getting preggo when I'm fifty."
