The last thing Amarlie wanted to do was burn this soup. She had been obsessively checking it, adjusting the temperature, stirring it. It gave her something to do over than the crippling overthinking she had been stuck in. It had only been after Justin called her out on avoiding a deep conversation with Keegan that she knew it was true. But for no other reason than she didn’t know how to have this conversation with him. Last time she had to face a horrible mistake like this, it ended terribly. Deep down, she knew Keegan was nothing like the horrible asshole who treated her badly last time she accidentally fell pregnant, but she was scared nonetheless.

Keegan had arrived in New York and Justin accompanied Amarlie to see him. He was staying with Alec, where his big brother, Kade was already a frequent guest. Kade and Alec were dating long-distance and it seemed to work, though Amarlie knew Alec would be over the moon if Kade stayed in New York. Kade just hadn’t been able to take the leap of faith and commit yet. Back when they were teenagers, they had been friends-with-benefits for years. Then they dated before their respective chosen careers - Alec, joining the military to study being a psychiatrist, and Kade, an Olympic-bound swimmer - split them worlds apart. They knew they had to set their relationship aside for their ambitions. Now they found each other again, but Amarlie knew that the relationship thing had to be hard, especially long-distance.

That was another thing stressing her out. She knew she had feelings for Keegan... )

When: After this

Keegan didn’t know what day it was, what time of day it was, what year is was. He had no idea how long he had been asleep through the jetlag. He knew he wasn’t in Australia, but even then, it took a few lingering moments after waking up to realise he was in a strange room and the only things he owned there were still wadded up in a large suitcase sitting on a sofa by the windows cloaked in blinds that were either fantastic block-outs, or it was the middle of the night. He woke up thirsty as all hell with a dry mouth. The downside of long flights was the germs percolating in the air vents. He would be lucky if he escaped without a cold in that germ-friendly environment and getting off at New York where the weather was fucking freezing in comparison to the Australian summer he left behind.

He was still tired when he woke up. That heavy sort of tired where your brain felt like it stopped functioning properly. But he needed to get a drink before he rolled over and went back to sleep. He checked his phone, but the battery was dead. He couldn’t check the local time and there wasn’t a clock here in Alec’s guest bedroom. After the initial groggy haze of waking, he remembered why he was even in here in New York and his stomach churned again. He shook his head to himself and got up, stopping by the attached en-suite bathroom before making the trip to the kitchen for a glass of water. The apartment was silent and still. He didn’t know if Alec was home but Kade was probably catching up on some sleep too.

That was why, when the doorbell rang on his way back from the kitchen with his glass of water, he didn’t give any thought on answering if before they rang again and woke Kade... )

Kade hoped the seatbelt sign wouldn’t come on again with the flight hit more turbulence. Now wasn’t the time for the damn weather to be farting around. At the door of the plane’s bathroom, he paused briefly and then knocked. “Kee? You okay in there, buddy?” he asked. The reply he got was some pretty emphatic puking noises and he winced, rubbing his hand over his face.

Being a big brother was one of the most important gigs any bloke could have and he always prided himself in the job. But his little brother, Keegan, had always been such an easygoing kid. He never got caught up in messy shit, he wasn’t a brat, he had a big heart. He was always that kid in the playground who would go sit with the kid who got hurt or was being picked on to keep them company. He was the kid who would accompany another kid to the sick bay at school if they weren’t feeling well. It was never a surprise for Kade and his parents when Keegan said he wanted to be a nurse. That was never even a flight of fancy, either. He got the grades and was now enrolled in a double degree of Paramedical Science and Nursing, with to major in Mental Health. Kade was SO fucking proud of him. Which is why this latest turn of events felt like a huge kick in the nuts. Kade kind of wanted to puke himself, but he had to be the big brother. Alec had been coaching him how to navigate this situation through multiple text messages since Keegan broke the news.

Keegan had been stressed to the max and coiled up like a fucking pretzel, but not saying much. He put his headphones in after they took off at Sydney Airport and Kade thought it was because he didn’t want to talk about anything... )
