In a heartbeat, Justin had managed to perform a small miracle for Layla and Maryanne. Being the end of the Australian school year, Maryanne's time of her exchange here in New York had come to an end, and they had been faced with the prospect of her needing to go home to Australia and see if they could come up with some other way for Maryanne to get back here... or it would be waiting until they were old enough to get married, which wouldn't happen until Layla was at least in college.
Then in one week, when Justin was already trying to work miracles attempting to grant the wish of a terminally ill girl, Justin had asked Maryanne to come along to a meeting to sing with him. All Maryanne had thought was that she was doing him a favour for something to do with the Shades of Violet, but hadn't thought a single thing about it because Justin worked with a lot of different people for different reasons. Apparently what he had been doing was sound-testing her, and seeing how her voice could support him in back-up. Justin's vocal range was awesome, he could go high or low, and he had a strength to his voice that meant he needed back-up singers who could be versatile with him.
That morning, Layla had been on the end of an excited screaming phone call when Maryanne called her to tell her Justin had a job offer contract couriered over to her, offering her a permanent position as his back-up singer for any performance he did beyond
Footloose. What that meant was if Justin's management could employ her officially, and for a skill such as performing arts, they could sponsor her for a visa to stay and work in New York. He just hadn't mentioned it to anyone before then because he had to be able to hear for himself if she had the ability to support him. The only two catches were that she had to work with Reecy any time Justin was incapacitated with his illness and Reecy worked in his place, and that she had to start with him effective immediately for Christmas concert on the weekend.
Like they were even catches! That was how Layla had come to be there at the concert venue that morning with Maryanne, for Justin's allocated time to soundcheck on the stage. It was how she had come to be sitting there in the front row of the currently empty VIP section Sasha, and feeling a lump in her throat as she listened to Justin warm up his vocals singing something of a rock ballad version of Dolly Parton's
I Will Always Love You. Yes, she
sent Will a text, because as much as he wanted to ignore shit going on in his life, it was happening. This was how it was playing out, and beside her, Sasha was sitting there, elbows on knees, head in hands, giving Justin an epic case of heart-eyes. Layla had this feeling deep in her gut that something was happening with Justin and Sasha, because Justin singing this seemed extremely poignant. She couldn't shake the emotion she was feeling. All she could hope was that Will used this experience to grow and learn, and not turn into an even bigger incommunicado ostrich. Life was too precious to treat your friends and family like an option, not a priority.
