Who: Billy Willis and Ajay Bellerose
What: Helpless
Where: Billy and Jude's apartment
When: Morning after Halloween
At some point the evening before, Mrs Parsons had relinquished a large bag of candy and other junk food to Jude when she met him in the hall after his shift at the hospital. She had over-shopped for the visit with her grandkids and thought Jude and Billy would be able to use it up, otherwise it would just go to waste. On top of that was a huge fresh batch of chocolate cupcakes with cotton candy on top she made them for Halloween. Billy hadn't been feeling the best the evening before, feeling like he was coming down with a cold or something, so he decided to go to bed early. Ajay had been okay, watching TV on the sofa and assured Billy he would be fine, and that he should go get some rest. Billy had crashed right out, he hadn't heard anything all night.
The first he knew of the surplus food was a note from Jude stuck to the fridge. His big brother hadn't had the heart to turn it down, and he told Billy to eat it all so Ajay wouldn't feel bummed he couldn't have any. Billy's stomach did a nervous flip-flop when he read it, and he yanked the fridge open to find what was on offer, but nothing was there. He was on his way to check on Ajay, but passing the bathroom, he heard it. Jude had a really early shift that morning, so it was Ajay in there, and he was throwing up forcefully.
Billy immediately felt like he had failed him. He leant back against the wall heavily and nursed his palm over his forehead. He felt so out of his league with all this, and absolutely no idea how he could help anymore. Maybe Ajay didn't want the help, or wasn't in a place to be ready to accept it. The helplessness actually caused him to choke up, fighting off the urge to cry. Had he done the right thing bringing Ajay here? It couldn't be the wrong thing, because Ajay had just been planning on going home to his apartment alone, and then what?
He was jolted out of his mess of thoughts when there was a loud crash from inside and without thinking, he grabbed the handle of the bathroom door and opened it up. Ajay's crutches must have fallen to the floor the way they were haphazardly lying across the bathroom floor. But there was Ajay, sitting slumped on the floor by the toilet sobbing his heart out. Billy just went in and wet a face cloth at the sink before sitting down on the tiles beside Ajay. "Ajay..." he said softly, carefully placing a hand on his arm. "Here, just..." Maybe he should have thought it out more, but he slipped his arm around Ajay's shoulders, and then with his other hand, gently pressed the cool cloth to Ajay's forehead.
