Hi, darling. Sorry for the late hour, I just thought it was best to give you plenty of notice. I don't think Beau will be able to make it to his shift in the morning.

When Austin arrived home after a busy day of work, shopping, and trawling through Google still trying to decide on the perfect wedding venue, his arms were laden with bags from various designer clothing boutiques and groceries from Whole Foods to cook a special dinner for Beau when he got home from work later. Although Beau's shifts could be erratic and long, they had found an easy rhythm together again since reuniting and deciding to get remarried. So much had happened during the breakdown of their marriage - towards the end, during, and when they came back into each other's lives - that it wasn't a matter of being able to 'do-over'. They both knew that. It was about restarting, knowing they were both different people now after all they had survived. Still, one thing Austin would never take for granted again was how familiar Beau was and how right he felt with him. They were meant to be. Austin definitely thought soul mate material but Beau had never really believed in that concept. Mostly because he had almost died twice in his short life now that he saw the world in a much more layered way than most. He did agree, though, that at least in this life while he still had one, they belonged together.

Part of Beau's promise to marry him again and the acceptance of his proposal was that this time, he wanted Austin to have his dream wedding. Their last marriage was spur of the moment at City Hall because he struggled back then with the concept of having a future. He thought looking too far ahead would jinx having one at all. It had been perfect for them at the time and Austin never felt he missed anything not having the big white wedding he once dreamed of as a kid. Only now, it made sense to do it differently this time around. Beau didn't want him to have to sacrifice anything for him and since they agreed to that, Austin had been all-in on the wedding planning. It had been a good distraction after news of Justin and Sasha's terrible car crash, which effectively put Austin's contract as the designer of Justin's permanent tour wardrobe and Justin as the face of Austin's clothing label indefinitely on hold. He still had a lot of other clients, of course, and designing for each new season would always keep him busy but planning their wedding was definitely a priority, second only to focusing on their relationship more this time around. All the little things that meant something, that were easy to get lost in the mix when life got hectic.

Enthusiastically singing It's Raining Men, the last song on his playlist in the car, he juggled his keys out of his pocket and by some small miracle managed to get the door open without dropping anything. He nudged it open with his hip and did a quick pirouette through the door, letting it swing closed behind him. He was only a few steps inside the sprawling open-planned loft apartment when he stopped short, spotting Beau sitting on their modular sofa nursing a beer on his chest. The apartment was dimly lit by only one lamp by their open fireplace and even though the TV was on, Beau didn't seem to be watching it.

"Hey, darling. What are you doing home? I wasn't expecting you until later. I thought you were working the evening. Shit, did I open the wrong day on our Google Calendar again?" He dumped all the bags on the dining table and came over to Beau, leaning over his shoulder to give him a kiss and a cuddle. "Beer, huh? Everything okay?"

As promised, Jaxson woke Brandon up later that afternoon and he had to admit, having a good few hours of steady sleep definitely helped him feel a bit better and his head didn’t feel so much like it had a demonic jackhammer going off inside his skull. It took him awhile to fully wake up and battle dragging himself out of the warm cocoon of their bed so before heading back to the hospital, he decided to take the bath he had been planning with the muscle soak before Cillian had intercepted him in the lobby.

It gave him a lot of time to think lying there in bubbles letting the warm water soothe all the aches and pains through his body. Not to mention, bathing actually made him begin to feel human again. When he got back to the hospital to see Merlin, he was freshly shaven and his still slightly damp hair was combed back from his face. He opted for a comfortable pair of grey sweatpants and a soft white Balmain knit sweater because he planned on visiting with Merlin for as long as he was allowed.

Merlin was out for the count when he arrived so Brandon asked to speak to his doctor to get some updates on how he had been... )

When his doorbell sounded, Austin shot awake with a jolt. He was lying on his stomach, one arm looped around a naked Beau asleep in the bed next to him. He propped himself up on his hand, groggily peering around through squinted eyes to try and figure out what had woken him. His immediate thought was that Beau had woken him for some reason, which made his gut do a little flip-flop to even think of. He didn't know if he could tell Beau this, but ever since Beau told him he had clinical depression and had contemplated ending his life, that was a worry hanging over his heart. Even if Beau reassured him he had no intentions of acting on the thoughts and his psych treatment had been successful in controlling them.

He was careful to shift in the bed so Beau didn't wake up and blearily flopped out of bed to grab his robe and face mask. He was trying to messily tie the robe's sash around his waist when he answered the door, again just expecting it to be a delivery driver. At the sight of his masked twin brother, Angel, Austin squeaked in surprise. "Oh my god!" He grabbed his twin in a smooshing reflexive hug because it had been months since he had seen him in person and it was either that or burst into tears at seeing him.

"You're here! Fuck, why are you here?" he quickly added, lightly shoving Angel back to arm's length so he could assess if he was okay or not. Then he yanked him back into the squeezing hug, social-distancing be damned.

Austin usually wasn't the sort to get bored but this pandemic lockdown alone at home had him raking through just about every tolerable offering on the Netflix catalogue and almost completing designs for his entire next season collections complete with prototypes. He had been overseas when everything hit and rushed home so he wouldn't have to be stuck out of the country if borders shut but it meant he had to isolate for a couple of weeks alone and by then, everyone he might've been able to stay with were in their own lockdown and doing their best to take care of themselves.

Beyond boredom, there was loneliness. He was a people person, as extroverted as they came, so all this was challenging. He was really just how lonely being a divorcee without restaurants, nightclubs, or cocktail parties to entertain himself and take his mind off things. His normally honed fitness regime had well and truly lapsed, so much so that instead of working out like he had been putting off for days, he fell asleep on the sofa hugging the Netflix remote and was woken up when his doorbell rang.

The doorbell wasn't a foreign sound. He had been ordering way more takeout than he wanted to admit but only from his favourite places because he knew they were hygienic and he was a bit of a germophobe. Or a lot of a germophobe. He had always been one but it increased significantly when he was married to Beau, who's immune system had been completely decimated when his leukemia relapsed and he needed bone marrow to survive it. Other than being bored and lonely, undoubtedly what had occupied his mind the most was his ex-husband. He didn't want to dwell but it was hard not to when you were stuck self-isolated alone.

This time, he hadn't ordered any food and a quick check of his phone told him he'd actually been napping for close to two hours. He grabbed one of the face masks he had made for himself, because there was no way he could settle for a boring medical one, and pulled it on before he answered the door. He had been expecting a neighbour or a delivery guy dropping something at the wrong address, so he was stunned when he opened the door and Beau was standing there.

"Beau!" he squeaked. Since this whole thing happened, Beau had pretty much gone underground. He wasn't working or leaving his home at all because his immune system was still compromised. If he caught this virus, it could very likely kill him. "What the-- why are you--?"

Beau rolled onto his back, tugging the sheets with him and let out an apathetic breathless sigh. He gazed up at the ceiling, swiping his hand over his sweaty face. Then he closed his eyes and knotted his fingers in his hair, feeling the steam drain out of him.

“We probably shouldn’t have done that, should we?” Austin bit his lip, clutching to the corner of the sheet with a hesitant glance thrown in Beau’s direction. He wasn’t even sure he should speak up. Beau was totally unreadable in this moment and Austin was painfully aware his ex-husband - who he was still in love with - was naked in bed beside him. He was also still painfully erect beneath the sheets but he wasn’t going to verbalise that. He just had to think unhappy thoughts to try to get it to go down but the more he tried not to think about it, the more his dick felt like it was throbbing.

Unexpectedly, Austin did manage to find an apartment in the time since he got trashed and Beau hooked him up to a banana bag in hospital and that Beau was away on a conference followed by a brief secondment to consult on a case in Minnesota. He really didn’t expect Beau to text him when he returned. But true to his word, as always, Beau kept his promise and shot Austin a text suggesting they should give this talking thing another shot. The apartment Austin found was a loft and was still empty, save for a mattress on the floor, a couple of beanbags, and a fridge. He tried to keep busy and not hyperfixate on Beau, which is how he managed to find an apartment and sign a lease. There hadn’t been time to go furniture shopping but at least he didn’t have to tell Beau to meet him in a hotel room for their all-important follow up ‘talk’.

As soon as Austin answered the door to Beau, he knew something was different... )
