People often didn't realise how much of a waiting game it was for a coma patient to regain enough functioning to not only be aware of their surroundings, but to interact. Niko had been in and out for a good few days now. Zelda had been hoping he might wake when they brought Shannon to see him before they had to get him home to bed, but Niko wasn't going to play that game. They could have all the signs in the world, but that didn't mean it would all follow through with a patient regaining consciousness enough to talk to any of them. He hadn't even really been responsive, even if he had been starting to flutter his eyes or move his hands and feet.
It was different that day. Before Miles went home after his nightshift, he came and told Zelda in the ER that Niko had been awake and responsive in the very early hours of the morning. Zelda made sure she was up here to see him as soon as her lunch break started. She sat with him, holding his hand, and when he did start to wake up again, she didn't jump on him straight up. She let him take the time he needed to be a bit more receptive. "You seriously just woke yourself up with
the biggest fart, you know," she offered as soon as he had his eyes open a little and was looking at her. "Like, charming way to welcome your favourite niece, Niks."
