The surprise that greeted me getting home after my first day at school. And took 8 attempts to get Dory out of the lap to get the photo.

"Love, pain and sorrow."

Who: Richie Jameson and Shannon Webster
What: More than a patient
Where: Pediatriacs, Mount Sinai
When: Middle of Monday night
It was a bit of a slow night at work, but you didn't take those for granted. Richie used the lull in his nightshift to check in on Shannon. The kid was practically family, and news of Niko had hit him hard. Max, Niko's brother and Shannon's dad, sent out a mass text to everyone Niko knew to alert them what had happened. There was too much going on for the news to come individually to anyway. Richie heard through Miles, who was on shift when Niko was admitted to the ICU in DKA. He was also hypothermic because he had been lying out there in the cold while his body was in shock from the DKA. He was in good hands and stable, but he was still critical because he had fallen into a coma. This was the dangers of diabetes you were warned about. This wasn't the first time Niko had been in a diabetic coma.
He expected Shannon to be asleep at that hour, but he was also having issues with uncontrolled pain, and Richie wanted to check if he needed any top-ups to get him through the night. The poor kid was awake and he was teary. Richie's heart immediately broke for him. He went over to the bedside and softly ruffled Shannon's hair. "Having a bad night, buddy? It's hard, I know. I know it hurts that you can't see him," he murmured and offered Shannon his hand to hold, using the other to grab some Kleenex to wipe away his tears.
