"Masquerading as a man with a reason."

Who: Niko Webster, Shannon Webster and Jeff Hinton
What: Life Operating System Update
Where: The Webster Farm, Leonia
When: Tuesday
Niko still wasn't quite sure exactly how to process Jeff's bombshell, but he wasn't a dicksplash. It wasn't his nature to lose his shit and run away from something like that. Or anything, really. He had never been a runner. He didn't always understand life, and life had thrown some pretty scary shit in his and his family's path over the time. Life had been pretty peachy until Richie was suddenly nearly bleeding to death all over the place, and Niko was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes a few years later when he got seriously sick and fell into a coma. Most recently, the bad shit was Shannon's accident. Shannon's mom had married Niko's big brother, Max. Shannon was just a sprog when his own father had died, so he knew no other dad than Max. Niko had been a kid himself when all that happened.
Max was the reason Niko wanted to become a vet. He wanted to follow in his big brother's footsteps, and so he did. He wasn't a natural genius or anything like that, and studying his degree had been really fucking hard. Max supported him right through, even when tragedy struck the family when Shannon was thrown from an unbroke horse and disabled for life. Niko's studies nearly crashed and burned through that, but Max had told him he had to keep going the best he could. Shannon would be impacted for the rest of his life if he thought he was in any way to blame for Niko not finishing college. That was what got Niko through. That was two years ago now.
And because life had a way of being torn out from under you when family tragedy hit, Niko became bad at keeping in touch with his old school friends. For the last two years, he just threw himself into the last leg of college and training with Max. He never really considered his friendship with Richie and Jeff to have dissolved, other things just took over. As a result, Jeff wouldn't have seen Shannon since he was about 13 years old, just a goofy, bright as a button kid with the world at his feet... feet he could still walk on.
Niko felt that if Jeff was serious about whatever this was he was saying was going on - something Niko was yet to know the definition of - Jeff was going to have to come along with him to visit Shannon and his family, and ASAP. It was just bad timing that it happened to be when Shannon's pain condition had flared up and he was off school. But Niko thought maybe that was the best time, because Shannon could do with some visitors checking to see how he was holding up while Fin was at school. What Niko needed to know was that Jeff wasn't going to re-beige on him again with things that truly mattered... and Shannon was one of the most important things that mattered in his life.
When they got to the farm, Shannon's mom was helping him take a shower and use the bathroom, which was a really long and difficult process because of the pain. Niko and Jeff had a cuppa in the kitchen with Max and Kelly while they waited. Kelly rightly reminded them that even once Shannon was done, he might not want visitors. Niko was determined to wait and see. But he did, and he came into Shannon's room with a sympathetic smile. "Hey there, Superman. Well, you don't look like you'll pass for any prom date photos right now." He went to sit on the side of the bed beside his nephew and offered out a giant paper bag. "Non-perishable junk food for whenever you're feeling up to having any. Make sure you share with your boy, though, or he might bitchslap you." Joking was something Niko never stopped with Shannon. He knew Shannon wanted things to stay as normal as they could, and joking was just part of what Niko was. "I picked up a stay on the way in. Don't worry, I treated him for fleas."
