"Just too many people."

Who: Jesse Hartley with Jace Turner and family
What: Thanksgiving
Where: Turner Family Home in Chicago
When: Thanksgiving evening
Jesse always assumed Jace's entire family would be has protective of Jace as Evan was. He just hadn't spent much time with them one-on-one. When Jace had been really sick a couple of months back, his family had come to New York, but mostly it was just ships passing in the night with family visiting Jace while Jesse swapped his time between sitting with Jace and working. This was a whole new ball game for him. He had flown to Chicago with Jace, Evan, and Christian for Thanksgiving after insisting he had no desire to go back to South Carolina to see his family, so the Thanksgiving arrangements were easy.
Though, Jace was off. Jesse knew that he had been distracted and a lot more quiet than he usually was since the whole issue of the guy showing up who had been in the car that hit him. Even more unusual, Jace hadn't wanted to tell Evan the guy had come and he hadn't wanted Jesse to tell him either. It led to him having a panic attack the other morning out of the blue, and luckily Jesse knew how to cope with one of those and helped him through it. But he definitely wasn't his usual Jace self when they woke up on Thanksgiving to get an early flight to Chicago.
( It was obvious Jace was having a bad day... )

Who: Christian Casey and Jesse Hartley
What: Damage control
Where: Turner Home, Chicago
When: Thanksgiving
Christian knew his job was to stand back through this whole difficult event of Jace having a seizure in the middle of a large family gathering for Thanksgiving. Unlike Jesse, he was still sort of an interloper. He and Evan were just dating, nothing more. They didn't even live together. He had come along because Maddie was having Thanksgiving with Jeremy, Tyler and Nathan, and their folks were away in Japan on business. Plus, it was a nice offer from the Turners, so he went along for Evan.
But for Jesse, who did live with Jace, was engaged to him, and was getting married to him in February, this whole thing would have been like a kick in the guts to him. As soon as Jesse backed away and walked out of the room, Christian knew this was a tough gig for the poor guy. He had tried to protest, keep his deserved place at Jace's side while he was sick, but it had fallen on deaf ears by a family who probably really did feel they knew what was best for Jace. The thing was both parties knew that. They knew what to do, how to do it, why to do it, but in this case, Christian felt like Jesse should have been given the proverbial reigns because he had more than proven himself capable of taking care of Jace.
He sighed, and soon discreetly exited the dining room too. He grabbed a couple of cans of Diet Cokes from the fridge and then went out the back on the freezing night to find Jesse. He was sitting out on a decorative garden chair that faced out into the backyard. Christian came up and rested a gentle hand on Jesse's shoulder. "You okay, dude?" he asked quietly, even if it was a stupid question, Jesse deserved the opportunity to put up bravado walls and pretend he was okay if he needed to.

Just after midnight, so it's exactly one year to the day since I met Jace. Best year of my life, worst Thanksgiving of my life.
