Who: Luke Jackson and Haley Jackson
What: A twist of fate
Where: Neonatal ICU, Mount Sinai
When: Early hours of Saturday

Haley was usually pretty thick-skinned when it came to her work. Not in a way that she was desensitized, but she had a huge heart and could take a lot on board. She saw some amazingly happy things, but also some horrific things too. With the joy of being an Obstetrician helping people bring their children into the world, there were also the cases that went horribly wrong. Luke knew his wife. He knew she wasn't saying much in their brief text conversations, but he just knew something was up. Something she was too busy to talk about or wasn't ready to talk about it. It happened. It was part and parcel of the job.

He had been crashed out on the sofa on his stomach, one hand hanging over the edge where it had fallen off and dropped his phone. He had been sleeping so heavily he was snoring and drooling on the pillow. He had tried to wait up for her, but after three nights running at the bar, it was a losing battle. His cell ringing had woken him up and it was Haley, still at the hospital, but asking him to come in to see her. That was really odd. Like, never happened before odd. He always went to have meal breaks with her if he could, or dropped in to see her on her longer shift and bring her a coffee from her favourite cafe... but this was different, and as he made his way through the halls of the hospital, he had a nervous apprehension gnawing in his gut.

He was in a pair of designer jeans and an INXS t-shirt, hair damp and brushed back from a rushed shower he took before hurrying out the door to come here. He had no idea why she had asked him to come here to this unit either. Of course, she had cases that could end up in NICU, but when he had bumped into Nate in the hall who was working the unit that morning, he gave Luke a soft pat on the back and a strange, almost sympathetic smile. What the hell was going on?

He had his wallet, keys and cell phone in his hand as he stepped into the foyer of the NICU, looking around and feeling really out of place. It was just a little further on that he found Haley in the hall, looking in through a large window, chewing on the corner of her thumb nail. Her hair was only half caught up in a ponytail, while the rest had fallen loose like she had been through a hard shift. He glanced around again, expecting someone to jump out and tell him what was going on and he stepped up to her, looking in through the window she was gazing at and finding it was full of seriously ill babies in incubators, hooked up to tubes and monitors, being watched by many staff milling around. "Am I even allowed in here...?" he asked her, voice hushed like he was on a covert operation or something and expecting to be tapped on the shoulder and told to GTFO.
