I know. That's what worries me the most. I wish we could get him into a hospital. I know we promised we wouldn't unless we had to, but I think we're going to have to.

He's just not eating. We've been trying, but he just sits there looking at it looking green and somewhere halfway between wanting to cry, or throw it angrily into a wall.

He said the smell of the hospital is the same as the smell in the morgue. This kid, he keeps breaking my heart over and over.

I think for a long time, he felt like he had made it past the worst. Sort of resolved himself to the new life and was so, so strong in getting back on his feet. But now the world has collapsed out from under him again.

It was like he'd found solid ground, and then the rug got torn out from under him.

I keep fooling myself I have it all together as a mom. As soon as I realised he had passed out on the plane, I was almost had a panic attack. And you know what one of the other passengers asked me? A retired nurse, apparently. She asked me if he was a drug user because he had just gotten up to the bathroom a short while before and was there for a little while. Because he was dressed in black and had tattoos.

If I wasn't so worried, I probably would have hit her. I just asked her if she was a fucking drug user too, because she seemed like an expert on the signs. He was feeling so rotten, he just laid down with his head in my lap the rest of the way.

If he was a blonde-haired, blue-eyed kid without any body art, no one would've batted an eyelid. They don't know him. They don't know that's how he expresses himself, and it's how he protects himself.
