"Leaving on a jet plane."
Who: Amarlie-Rose Satori with Justin, Sasha, Gen and Mark
What: Where everything is changing and nothing will be the same again
Where: JFK International Airport, NYC
When: Sunday
Amarlie couldn't believe this was happening. First, she found her mom. Then, she met her brother who, granted probably initially thought she was a serial killer, but now wanted to get to know her. So much so that he had suggested they come along to this spontaneous holiday to London that his dad was taking him and his boyfriend on because Justin was feeling like he needed refresh some happy and fun things in his life.
At first, she thought Gen had been joking. Maybe that's what the family did. They joked. She had soon learned that yes, that was what they did anyway. Mr Campbell was hilarious, with a dry Aussie sarcastic humour to him, and Justin seemed to have that streak in him too. It was probably impossible to avoid that. But Gen hadn't been joking about her invitation, so Amarlie's mind was spinning as she sat there in the First Class airport lounge while they waited for the boarding call for their First Class flight to London.
Amarlie's parents were extremely well off in their own right. This wasn't her first overseas trip, but her parents usually travelled Business Class. This was her first First Class travel, and not only that, Gen and Mr Campbell were paying for her. They were paying for her for the entire trip, and she was stunned. Mr Campbell had booked them a three bedroom apartment suite in London. Justin and Sasha were taking the master bedroom with the king bed, and the two other rooms were twins with two queen beds in them. Mr Campbell was taking one, and Gen and Amarlie the other. That was going to be strange for her, sharing a bedroom with her biological mother when she had been feeling like Gen didn't even want her in the picture. Things had turned a complete 360, and it was mindblowing.
She couldn't help but just sit there and take in what was around her in these moments. It was like she was logging everything away in fine detail. There was Justin and Sasha. They were beyond adorable, and Amarlie found herself drawn to just observing them together... whilst trying not to make it obvious she was staring, of course. She had her phone in front of her, but she was still watching them over the top of it.
They had been holding hands pretty much the whole time save for when luggage was needing to be carried and checked. Justin was once again wearing a bandanna with a hoodie over the top of it and it seemed to make him inconspicuous in the crowd. That was good. The last thing he probably needed was, well, people like she had been in the cafe coming up to him and getting in his face when he was trying to relax. On and off, they share kisses, and smiled and laughed together.
Now in the lounge, they had both settled on one of the lounges together. Justin was lying next to Sasha with his head resting back on Sasha's shoulder, and Sasha's arms were around him, holding his iPad so they could both see what was on the screen. They were in their own little world chatting quietly. She watched as Sasha let go of the tablet so he could gently stroke Justin's cheek with his thumb. Then Justin smiled and tipped his head up to meet Sasha's lips in another kiss.
Amarlie wondered what they were talking about, but at the same time, she didn't want to know because it was their moment together. She had friends who dated back home, but that didn't really look like this. She wondered if what her friends went on about was superficial and for appearance, ultimately making it look less real than this. She wondered what happened with Justin and Will to have it end, and wondered how Will could let Justin go like that. But maybe sometimes things really did happen for a reason.
Once again, she was finding it unbelievable that her biological family was this. Gen and Paris, owning the magazine she had poured over, every single month, for ages. And Justin. But far from the teen idol pin-up boy Justin was, with the big heart and the even bigger voice, she had seen one of the media articles refer to him as, he was just a normal teenage guy here. It spoke of his charity work, and how he tirelessly used his talent to raise money for young people mental illness like himself.
At least, as normal as he could be with his wrist in a split from trying to commit suicide. She knew that now. Sasha had revealed it to her on Facebook. That was why they hadn't accepted her friends request straight up, Justin had been in hospital and then knocked down in the wake of it. That was another thing she was trying not to stare at. His hoodie sleeve was mostly pulled over it, but you could see his hand was braced just past his knuckles. He hadn't been able to lift anything or pull his suitcase with it, so Sasha did it for him. This was the closest she had ever been to anyone who brushed with suicide, and it was her brother. Technically. She wasn't sure if Justin thought of her as his sister, and she hadn't been able to pluck up the courage to ask him.
Soon, Justin's watched beep with some sort of alarm and it made Amarlie jump when they moved. She dipped her head quickly so they didn't catch her watching them. Justin sat up and started to rifle through his cabin bag and Sasha got up to go over to the nearby vending machine. He brought Justin back a bottle of water and a bottle of Gatorade. The Gatorade was stashed away in the bag, but now she could see what was happening. Justin was taking his medication. Damn, it was pile of pills he had to take. It was a heavy reminder to her that it really was true, he was sick, even if he didn't look it on the face of it. It was a terrible invisible illness. It would be easy to forget he was actually disabled. Those were his words. He put it like that at the party. He was clinically disabled and his dad was his primary carer.
Then he was looking up at Sasha with a smirk, and he grabbed Sasha's butt. Amarlie quickly looked away, trying not to laugh. It took all her effort not to giggle-snort. Well, one thing Justin wasn't was shy. She only felt slightly guilty for studying her brother like he was a social experiment, but she couldn't help it. She just wanted to know him. Her gaze averted to where Gen and Mr Campbell were sitting just a little across from her. Mr Campbell had looked up from his laptop to make sure Justin was fine with his medication, but he and Gen weren't really sitting next to each other.
This, and the separate bedroom? The thing was, they both still wore wedding rings. Something must be going on there, but she didn't want to be a nosy brat and ask awkward questions. She thought she could maybe ask Justin, but now wasn't the time. For all she knew, maybe one of them snored and didn't like to chat in airports. They both looked enthralled in work-type stuff too. Mr Campbell had been on the phone a couple of times, discussing something with a collegue. Gen had been working on her iPad. Both seemed to frequently check on Justin, sort of like second nature. That was a good parent's job. They seemed to realise they had to let Sasha take the lead, though. Sasha was new in the picture too, Amarlie knew that. It would be about Gen and Mr Campbell learning all that new stuff too.
That was when she was sitting there, watching Gen. She knew now how much she looked like her, but there was this strange niggle inside wanting to ask her just what her biological father looked like. She didn't want to find him. That urge had never been with her. She was curious about him, though. It went hand-in-hand with trying to discover where her genetics came from. Looking at Mark and Justin, they were the spitting image. There was no doubt Justin was Mark's. Though, she now also knew Mr Campbell was an identical twin, because Justin's Uncle Sam drove them to the airport and Amarlie had literally done a double-take... then felt embarrassed about it. Justin, of course, laughed at her. Brother prerogative.
She also knew that Mr Campbell had another child, a cute as a button tiny little munchkin... Justin's little sister, Jamie. You didn't have to be a genius to see how much she absolutely adored Justin when she was there to say goodbye to them. Her mom, Ali, was also there with another cutie on her hip. He was a toddler, Jack, with this sweet little smile. It was a pretty epic family construction, and Amarlie found herself enjoying every minute. Especially seeing how cute Justin was with Jamie - who everyone seemed to call Sunshine. She absolutely adored him and was covering his face in goodbye kisses, and then wrapping her arms around both him and Sasha in a squeezy hug.
Amarlie could never have expected her long lost family would be anything like this. She had no idea what was going to come next, or where any of this would lead, but she knew in her heart she had made the right choice. Now she could only hope like hell that when push came to shove, it all worked out well and didn't crash and burn.
