"When the world outside's too much to take, that all ends when I'm with you."
Who: Kyan Wilson with Reecy Chester
What: We're heading for something...
Where: New York City
When: Friday night
It was another day, another benefit. One of those crazy days where both Kyan and Reecy did their respective shows and then immediate after, rushed off to attend a Shades of Violet & Rainbow benefit. This time, they weren’t alone. Going on behind the scenes in recent months was with Presley’s funding and Justin’s coaching, a band was constructed called Violet Rainbow consisting of Justin’s musically-talented friends. The plan was that they would be a standalone band in their own right, playing charity gigs, but they would also back Justin for any of his benefit appearances and he would occasionally get up and sing with them at their gigs.
It was an incredible achievement and Kyan was proud of them all. There was Fin on drums, Shannon (who had conquered his fear of being a disabled musician) on keyboards, Cooper on guitar, Noah on guitar for acoustic numbers (he didn’t want to be a full-time member due to his health), Maryanne on vocals, Amarlie as their stylist. And apparently through the grapevine, Luka, the young guy Justin saved from a suicide attempt they met in Denver, was coming to New York to join the band as bass guitarist and Justin’s third back-up singer. Kyan wasn’t sure if it was actually in motion yet, or whether it was just in talks, but it was exciting to be part of the SoV family. Kyan felt it gave him purpose, and he would never not cherish his charity work. He knew above all else, that was the thing his mom would be most proud of him for.
That night, Reecy was performing. She was so talented and had one of the best voices Kyan had ever heard. He was proud of her and with how much she had been supporting him lately, it was important for him to return the favour. This benefit was close to her heart because it was to honour young women with mental illness who had achieved amazing goals despite their illnesses, through the support of Shades of Violet. It was not only to showcase their triumphs but also to raise money for an idea Justin had - a prom dance that was a safe place for young people with mental illness and/or who were LGBT+, merging the two foundations together. Not just to fund the dance, but to find a beautiful venue, pay for outfits, hair and makeup for anyone who wanted due to the fact they perhaps never had any self-worth or felt beautiful. Without a shadow of a doubt, Kyan knew this particular project would ultimately be extremely special for all those involved and Reecy had stepped up as Coordinator of it.
In the audience, Kyan was sitting at one of the tables, done up in a designer suit, only being able to contribute by sitting there looking pretty. When he had said that earlier, Reecy chastised him and told him that there was way more to him than looking pretty. Reecy started the set with Total Eclipse of the Heart, which was amazing.
But it was her second song that Kyan realised she was totally going to pwn him when the MC announced the next song was I’ve Had the Time of My Life when Rhys stepped out onto the stage and up to the microphone. Reecy had switched to a headset microphone, and suddenly Kyan was met with a bright spotlight practically blinding him when it was spun around to where he was trying to sit minding his own business like any introvert did so well. Next thing he knew, his name was being chanted by everyone in the audience and he felt close to wetting his pants. What the hell had just happened?!
He couldn't run, even if that was his Plan A. He knew in a heartbeat that he had to get up there to dance with Reecy. Holy shit, talk about epic pwning. Rhys was up there smirking at him. Bright red, face flushed with embarrassment, Kyan stood up and was met with a wave of cheering and whistling. Somewhere between moving away from the table and his feet at least figuring out to put one step in front of the other, it dawned on him that Reecy must know the dance routine. He was set-up. They were fundraising for a dance, so this was playing a charity trump card and using their assets to the best of their ability. Hell, if Kyan didn’t know Justin was ill in hospital, he would think the kid had orchestrated this because he always threw caution to the wind and thought bit. It seemed that Smooshie’s influence had rubbed off on his big sister.
Somehow managing not to pee himself, Kyan was soon up on the stage with Reecy dancing that routine he knew so well and had done so many times, he could do it in his sleep. Reecy’s beautiful long light pink evening gown had transformed into a short floaty dress much like Louise’s costume in the play reminiscent of the movie. She must have pulled the long skirt off or something. He hadn’t even noticed in his shock at literally being put in the spotlight without warning. Nevertheless, despite his terror, the crowd was apparently loving it if the noise they were making and the fact they were up from their seats dancing along with them.
And so, he danced. Reecy and Rhys sung the duet and Kyan had to do nothing but dance the oh-so-familiar dance with distracted him from vomiting with nerves. When Reecy flashed him a huge smile once his hands were on her waist. He just couldn’t help but smile back with a small, fond shake of his head. It was easy. It felt so natural with her, and she nail every fucking step. How was she doing that? It would turn out to be a night he remembered. It had to be as much for his benefit as the fundraising, because with the energy it created, he felt a burst of positive happiness shot through him with the adrenaline.
At the end of the song, Reecy still had her arm around his waist, rubbing his back. “Thank you!” she said breathlessly to the audience, blowing them kisses. “I have an announcement to make. It is with my absolute utmost pleasure that I can exclusively share with you all tonight I am going to be joining the cast of Dirty Dancing in the role of Baby.” The cheering became almost deafening and there was a table of young girls over to the left of the audience who were screaming. “Louise is expecting a baby and decided to focus on the next journey of her life. Caden Drake, our Producer, offered me the role and I decided that it was an offer I couldn’t refuse. I can also announce that Shades of Violet, along with Shades of Rainbow, have engaged a silent investor who has agreed to match dollar-for-dollar every donation audience members of Dirty Dancing and Footloose make to our donation buckets at the theatres. Tonight, Justin’s absence is prominent and it’s impossible not to feel the hole he leaves when he is out of action. I’ve had news that today that his condition is improving and I am sure he will be back with us again in the near future. It’s up to the rest of us to keep the flame burning until he can get back in the saddle. So, I urge you all to dig deep! It’s an amazing cause, and as you have all seen, offers ways for young people to not just find their true beauty and worth, but give them a safe place to do it with much love and ongoing support. Thank you again, guys! You’re amazing.” She made a heart with her hands, holding it up and sending it out to the audience.
Meanwhile, Kyan was stunned and speechless. The lights dimmed and Reecy stepped up to the microphone for a final song. He retreated back to his table where he had been sitting with Presley and Emilio to watch her, feeling his heart pounding in his chest. What an announcement. He was shocked, but over the moon. Not just for the fact Reecy was now going to be his new leading lady, but because Louise was having a baby. He hadn’t known that, but she had some sick days recently. He was going to have to give her a huge hug when he saw her. She had met a sweetheart and fallen head-over for him. He was kind and gently, supporting her completely. He was so happy for her.
When Reecy started to sing The Power of Love by Celine Dion, her beautiful voice ringing out through the venue. In the first lines, hands cupped around the mic stand, her gaze shifted to him and she held it. Some surreal sensation shot through Kyan in that moment and hit him, feeling like it could knock him off his feet. His heart was still beating wildly and feeling like it was echoing throughout his whole body. She had a similar vocal power to Justin, which is why their duets were so beautiful. Something began to twist inside him. Her voice spliced into his soul and something akin to a panicky feeling began to build up inside him. He wasn’t quite sure what it was, but it didn’t ease the whole time Reecy’s eyes were on him while she sang. He swallowed, and his tongue swept across his lips to wet them. He couldn’t take his eyes off her, and suddenly something hit him. Hard, sharp, swift, like a kick in the guts, taking his breath away.
He tried to fight it off, but he couldn’t. He felt like he was going to lose it and start crying. A few more moments ticked by with the beats of the song. Her voice was stunning, she was stunning. But he couldn’t stay. Weighed down by this new shock engulfing him, he got up from the table again and hurried from the room, bolting out the doors and bursting into the deserted foyer with its ornate marble flooring and marble columns standing proud. His steps quickened to a run and he made it out onto the street and fell back against the wall outside, hand on his chest, feeling the pounding of his heart. He could still hear Reecy singing faintly in the distance and he looked back at the venue door.
Fuck.
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, FUCK.
What the hell had just happened?
