"Help! I need somebody."
Who: Carter Beaumont and Karla Jameson
What: Parental Empathy
Where: Emergency Room, Mount Sinai
When: Thursday evening
Carter's nerves were shattered. To say the very least. He was standing there in the corridor of the Emergency Room at Mount Sinai watching his youngest son being wheeled away for more tests and scans before he was to be admitted. Harley was with him, though, so that was okay. This was just one of those incredibly hard things when you had to let your adult son's partner take the reigns of his care. Carter adored Harley, and the young man made Julian incredibly happy at a time it seemed like he might never be able to be happy again. Harley had been welcomed into their family with open arms, but Carter was still a typical over-protective, stressy father when his youngest child was ill and that helplessness felt like a physical weight on his shoulders.
He had been terrified Julian's body might be rejecting the donor kidney. It had been during the company's massive monthly Board Meeting that Julian seemed to go from a little off-colour to incredible sick in a short space of time. Like all Board Meetings, as 2IC to the corporation, Julian had his part to say. He had told Carter earlier after lunch that he wasn't feeling the best, but he would stay for the Board Meeting, because they had a merger on the table with a supplier in Asia. Julian was in the middle of his presentation when he paled and said he felt like he was going to pass out.
Carter got him sitting down just in time and Julian did actually lose consciousness briefly. When he came-to, he started vomiting and the rest of the Board were understandably concerned. Julian was burning up and sweating heavily. Carter told his PA to call for an ambulance and sat by Julian, trying to get him to drink some water and reassuring him that it was going to be okay. Julian kept apologising to him, saying he knew it was an important meeting. Typical Julian, ever the workaholic traits passed on by his father. In the ambulance on the way to the hospital, Carter kept trying to call Harley to let him know, but it was a little while before Julian's fiancé managed to make it to the hospital.
In the meantime, because he was so upset and panicked, Carter turned into a bit of a shit. He felt guilty for it now, because he knew there were other people there sick and injured who deserved attention just as much as Julian. But Julian was at incredible risk of rejecting the donor organ, so Carter turned into a twat, throwing his weight around and demanding someone look at his son immediately... that he gave countless amounts of donations to the hospital and even funded some of their units. His son should be seen to!
It was a kind (and beautiful) doctor who came to his aid and started examining Julian immediately. She seemed to recognise that he wasn't deliberately being a shit and was just incredibly worried about his son. She reassured both Julian and Carter as she did her job, and shortly later, Harley arrived (also in a panic). She referred Julian onto the transplant specialists and Julian was sent on from the ER quite promptly after that. All Carter could do was stand there and watch, rubbing his head helplessly.
