"Give liberty to set your heart and spirit free."
Who: Kolbie Bronson and Justin Campbell
What: BFFs and shit
Where: Broadway, NYC
When: Thursday morning
Kolbie had never seen Justin in one of his rehearsals before. He had seen the show multiple times. In fact, he was pretty sure he was in the double digits of times he had been in the front row watching Footloose since it had opened. Justin was the absolute bomb in the show. He never fucking missed a beat, and Kolbie couldn't be more damn proud of his best friend if he tried. It still blew him away that his best mate was up there in a lead role on a Broadway stage, and had shot very quickly to stardom simple based on his talent.
Though, Kolbie had always known Justin was talented. At least, until Justin started to forcefully stifle in, and then drown it in booze and drugs. The best thing Kolbie had ever done was chase his brother to New York and be able to witness the leaps and bounds Justin had come. Of course, in the midst of that, Justin had been seriously sick, almost committing suicide twice since being here, with some other attempts in the middle. That had been terrifying for Kolbie to witness and he had suffered a lot of guilt, thinking he could have helped Justin more back in Chicago.
He had spent a lot of time with Justin recently when he was sick, just sitting there with him and keeping him company when he was at his worst. Kolbie was one of the very few people who had been allowed to visit Justin in the psych ward. As scary as that had been, Kolbie went because Justin said it was okay. Nothing had been said on the two visits there, but Justin didn't tell him to leave either. He had just laid there staring at the wall with his fingers coiling into the edge of the sheet. It was the worst Kolbie had ever seen his friend.
That day, school was out because of some pest infestation, so Justin had invited Kolbie to sit in on the rehearsal if he had wanted to. He had said it 'might be boring for him' but he could come hang out if he wanted to. He did want to. Toby was sick in bed with that stomach bug going around, so he had nothing better to do. It hadn't been boring at all. In fact, there was Kolbie sitting crossed legged at the edge of the front of the stage singing and dancing. Just a few minutes before, he had been goofing off with his earpiece and microphone doing Darth Vader impressions. After that, he had been standing up on top of the piano singing My Sharona, followed by a cheesy 80s overly-enthusiastic duet of Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go with Phoenix, and then breaking into an impromptu sing-off/dance-off of the Nutbush with Reecy and Autumn (which he won)... proof he was still a teenage boy under all the bells and whistles. His knack for musical theatre was in his blood.
Then it had come to warm up time to lead into the rehearsal, and Justin switched immediately from the goofball into the purely focused professional Broadway performer. Justin's repertoire for impromptu performing always had Kolbie speechless. He had no idea how all that stuck in his brain that was ill and incapacitating at times as Justin's was. Before was obviously the physical warm-up, and now Justin was going to work on his vocals. His lead in this production, he had to do it all. He had serious!face on as he leafed through some sheet music and chose a song he wanted to warm up with, handing it over to the pianist. It was By My Side by INXS, a song Kolbie had never heard before now. For some reason, it seemed like a poignant choice.
