"I feel good inside the heartache."

Who: Merlin Larson and Brandon Blake
What: Finally jumping the hurdles
Where: Idaho
When: After this and this
Merlin had learned more about baking that day than he had his entire life. He had been keeping Joan company in the kitchen while she cooked up a storm for a local school’s charity fair. He helped her out with chopping or mixing or learning about why certain ingredients made recipes taste better. They had tea and chatted a lot, mostly about Merlin’s family and how he won the competition to get the part in Footloose. It was a good distraction for him or he would have just sat in the room staring at Brandon sleeping so he could monitor if he was still breathing.
Brandon had been discharged from hospital around three the previous afternoon after they kept him in for the necessary twelve hours. He responded to the treatment without further complications but he was exhausted and fell asleep in the car before they even got out of the parking lot. Norm and Joan drove them home in their car with Brandon asleep on the backseat with his head in Merlin’s lap. Brandon’s manager arranged for a private nurse to go to the farm once he was home from hospital to hook him up to another couple of IV bags to run overnight. It was the strict proviso that he be allowed to be discharged and she would come back the next morning to remove the lines.
Brandon’s Oncologist in New York also prescribed him antiemetic injections for when he had the severe vomiting bouts to try avoid him getting in the dehydration danger zone again, sending the medication order to the doctor at the Idaho hospital. The plan was for Brandon to give himself the injections but every time he tried, he got queasy and started heaving which was counterproductive so Merlin was tasked with the duty. He didn’t mind at all.
( They both went straight to bed when they got home (Brandon was out as soon as his head hit the pillow but Merlin waited until the nurse left) and slept through the night but Merlin woke up about five am, feeling much better after getting a really good night’s sleep... )
