"'Cause even if we can't be together, we'll be friends now and forever."

Who: Miles Morrison and Liam Morgan
What: Love and support
Where: ER, Mount Sinai
When: Early, early Sunday morning

This was one shift Miles was so glad he was on. He and Rhys both worked long hours on the weekends, but it meant they had days off together during the week, which was really their 'weekend'. They had found such a sweet and easy rhythm together, that Miles had never once doubted their decision to try taking their relationship from friendship to dating and romance. It wasn't hard. It wasn't miserable. It wasn't a battle. They adored each other's company. And now, they were engaged to be married, and tentatively talking about their wedding. They hadn't set a date yet. Nor would they any time soon. They wanted to be living together for twelve months first, to be sure they were happy together, and could function under the one roof long-term. It wasn't a given just because they loved each other. But they both agreed they would cherish a long engagement and it would give them plenty of time to figure out what they wanted for their wedding.

You just never wanted someone you knew to be a patient. But it happened. New York might be the biggest city in the world, but it was a small world. There was lots of interconnections, and the truth of the matter was, a lot of the staff at the hospital knew each other and hence their worlds interlinked. Miles valued that. He was lucky to love both his work and home life. He was more content than he had ever been, and hadn't felt low or sad in a long time. Even on the days he missed his dad, it wasn't as desperately painful because he was more content within himself.

But he didn't forget what he once had with Liam. He and Liam were still friends now. Even if it had been rough after the break-up, they salvaged a friendship and could nurture it back to something special. So, when Miles realised that the next patient being rushed into his bay was Paxton, and Liam had come in with him and was standing in the hallway covered in blood, Miles felt sick. But he had to focus. He wanted to give Liam a hug, but Paxton was unconscious, bleeding, and covered in bruises, presenting with a head injury and suspected internal bleeding.

It was typical resus panic, with Riley and Payton in control of their team. They stabilised Paxton, and he had to be sent to surgery to stop the internal bleeding. Throughout the frenzy of working on Paxton, Darius and Andrew, the paramedics who had brought Paxton in, handed over to them that Paxton had been beaten up by a couple of assailants, and from the sounds of it, it had been because he was trying to protect Liam from something. What the fuck had happened? "Miles, can you go assess Liam?" Riley requested once Paxton was stabilised, but condition still yet to be determined by tests and scans.

Miles didn't have to be asked twice. Liam had been taken to another bay in Triage, and he was sitting there, still bloodied, white as a ghost, and shaking. He had a shock blanket wrapped around him, and a Nurse's Aid was sitting with him, holding his hand and trying to get him to have a cup of tea. "Thanks, Hallie. I can take it from here." She pulled the curtain when she was gone, and Miles pulled the chair up close near Liam. "What happened, Li? You need to tell me what happened, okay?"
