"Another one bites the dust."

Who: Adrian and Tristan Hewitt with Richie Jameson
What: Blood, sweat and tears
Where: Mount Sinai, NYC
When: New Year night

Adrian was supposed to be a married man by now. Instead, he was standing at a hospital vending machine trying to get what would likely be a bland and tepid coffee to ring in the New Year. All that happened was 2016 dumping a timely reminder on them that no matter how good life could be, we all had our proverbial crosses to bear. Adrian being engaged to a hemophiliac was one of them.

Everything had been all set and ready to go for their ceremony that was doubling as a massive New Year's party. It wasn't meant to be. At least, not that day. And it was all a product of his beautiful man having a way too massive a heart for his own good. Richie had been working a late evening shift at work the day before New Year's Eve. He had a patient, a little boy, who had come in with injuries the parents reported was a result of him slipping on an icy step at the back of their house. Though when Richie had been examining the little boy, the child grabbed the sleeve of his mom's shirt and it tugged down, revealing bruising up the side of her neck and over her collarbone.

A short while later, when the mother tried to prevent the father going into the little boy's room, he had completely lost his shit and punched her in the face. Richie tried to to intercept so he wouldn't do her any serious harm, while one of the nurses called Security. They didn't get there before the damage to Richie was done. He copped to right hooks in the temple and a knee in the gut. It caused him to immediately start to bleed out, not just from his mouth and nose, which looked like a blood bath in itself, but the knee to the gut perforated something inside, and caused an internal bleed to.

Richie was rushed to theatre for them to try to get inside him to locate the source of the bleeding to stop it. All the while, the staff struggled to the bleeding from his head to stop. It had turned into an extreme medical emergency. Adrian had been at home trying to touch base with everyone to make sure the last minute details for their wedding were all in place when he got the phone call. Richie was still in the operating room when he got to the hospital, arriving there even before Karla did.

They found the bleed and cauterized it, but it was only with a lot of medical intervention that Richie's bleeds started to slow down. They had been administered blood transfusions all the while, yet he continued to bleed. The bleeding slowed, and Adrian was briefed by Christian in the ICU about what had happened. Richie face was black and unrecognisable from the contusions, and his torso matched. Before he bled so heavily, it made the bruising look much worse than it would for a normal person. All Adrian could do was hand the reigns of his wedding over to his Personal Assistant to cancel everything, telling her to pay whatever late cancellations fees were involved.

Richie wasn't conscious. He needed to stay in the ICU while they continued to administer blood transfusions to try to get his count back up. Other than the bruising, his skin was deathly pale and he was cold to touch. The last thing on Adrian's mind was the wedding. Christian had reassured Adrian that although Richie looked terrible, he was stable and there was no sign of serious head injury or bleeding on the brain. It was just that his body went into overdrive with the excessive bleeding, and they had to monitor him if it started to get worse again. All Adrian could do was sit and wait it out. And that was how he welcomed 2017. Watching the black coffee splattered into the cup, hearing the ball drop on the TV in the nearby waiting room as he picked the cup up and had a tired sip.
