"It's time."

Who: Just Richie
What: MF'ing Disneyland
Where: See above
When: After THIS

Richie's granddad had let slip over a family dinner one night one of Richie's amusing childhood moments. Having gotten pissed off at kids asking him why he didn't have a dad, he had began a phase of telling people 'I don't ever want to get married, I just want to go to Disneyland!' It was hilarious when you were eight years old. In many ways, Richie had grown up like his mom, ultimately being hardworking and career-focused. His conviction about Disneyland had never changed, but his ideals about marriage definitely had. Especially since Adrian had come into the picture.

It had been a rocky road, there was no doubt about that. Richie's life had been complicated shortly after Adrian had paid a million bucks for him in the bachelor auction. Even had Richie had been skeptical about the whole thing, they ended up sleeping together and the sex that first night had been fucking fantastic. Romance blossomed, and even though other parts of Richie's life became confusing and scary along the way, things kept evolving with Adrian.

Adrian never held back. He was romantic, funny, smart, talented, gorgeous. He was the perfect package, and it lead to Richie feeling sometimes that he was too good for him. Or that Adrian would eventually get fed the fuck up with having to run back to New York every time Richie got himself ill, injured or in an emotional wreck. But it had been Adrian who had been there for him when the ordeal with Zoran happened, when Richie had fallen ill and started bleeding internally, when things with Jeff died in the ass, and then when Richie suffered the vicarious trauma through his job with the rape victim patient and started drinking heavily.

The drinking heavily had lead to him doing dumb shit like getting a tattoo of Adrian's name on him, which caused a hemorrhage. As if that wasn't enough, he fell in the gutter, smashed his face in, and broke his ankle. It was literally rock bottom. So rock bottom that Richie's emotional responses caused Adrian to believe the relationship was over because Richie didn't want him around anymore. Adrian got self-conscious about his own privilege and rich lifestyle, which just came with the territory in the business he was in. He had been born to an affluent billionaire father, followed in his footsteps as a movie producer. His lifestyle was flying high. He thought that was too much and too overwhelming for Richie. Nothing could be further from the truth.

They worked on it. Richie was discharged from hospital and Adrian took him home. They put themselves into lockdown, and faced their relationship issues head-on. Even if Richie was feeling miserable and the last thing he wanted to do was that, he still did it. Adrian took him to therapy appointments, accompanied him to AA meetings where he connected with Mark as his sponsor. He helped Richie get dry, and it was perhaps the most romantic thing of all. Because it wasn't easy. It was downright fucking hard, and Richie had a lot of anger as he worked through the grief process of accepting he fell into alcoholic ways to try to drown out the trauma in his head. It had been worse because it wasn't direct trauma, it was vicarious. It was knowing what his mom had been through, and seeing it exhibit in front of him in a young patient who was violently raped and left pregnant.

Richie knew now that she did get the abortion. It was exactly how it had to be. Nathan had told him the outcome of the case so Richie wouldn't have to have the 'what-ifs' hanging over him forever. The girl was so young and was already dealing with the terrible trauma of rape. She was in no condition at her age to face a pregnancy. She was still a child. Richie worked through it all in therapy and began to turn a corner. With that corner, he started to think a hell of a lot about life and how good he actually had it.

He needed to be grateful for the now. He needed to enjoy the now. The now was the fact his career was still a huge part of his life. Before, it had been his whole life. He had worked hard through Med School, and scored the residency out of a hell of a lot of people. Nathan once again told him he was made to be a pediatrician, and soon, Richie began to believe it again. Most of all, Adrian was his now. Adrian was an angel on earth, and Richie wanted to enjoy him. He couldn't keep letting his messed up brain twist things up and ruin any of this. He picked himself up, brushed himself off, and started all over again.

Richie knew he had changed recently in many ways, and eventually it was for the better. He had grown up. He had realised what was important, and he made important decisions. Though, Adrian still had this way of completely surprising him and making him smile so much his face hurt. They were supposed to go stay at Adrian's beach house in The Hamptons for the weekend, and Richie took those little plans and began plotting a surprise of his own.

Only, Adrian again managed to plan something incredible and had pulled some of his many LA strings and surprised Richie with a stay in the Mickey Mouse Suite at Disneyland. Freaking Disneyland. Richie was in his element. He was a big kid, and a giant dork. None of that was a secret. Suddenly, it felt like he could shed all the darkness and just enjoy this fantastic fun weekend with his boyfriend. It was Disneyland, and as far as Richie was concerned, it was the perfect location for a romantic date. He didn't puke on a ride once. Success all around.

He wasn't ditching his plans altogether, though. Not at all. He was just in the bathroom getting ready for their dinner date out, and he stopped to give himself a staredown in the mirror. He still looked the same, but inside, he knew he was different. This wasn't The Hamptons, but who needed that when they had Disneyland. He drew in a deep breath, and exhaled heavily as he put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. He flipped it open, looking at the diamond ring inside with a silly smile on his face.

It was time.
